Converter

I have owned 5 campers so far and I had never given it much thought but when getting ready to tow the camper I had always turned the things off at the breaker box but I had never turned off the converter. It has finally dawned on me that leaving the converter on is bad. We stop and eat or stop at Walmart and buy food and all the while that converter was trying to charge the batteries off battery power, just killing the batteries. I had never given it much thought until I was reading on this forum.

The converter does not run off the batteries. It only operates off of the 120V AC input. There is no battery input to your converter.

Spock123 unless you are plugged into shore power your converter does nothing.

No but if you have an inverter installed (say a residential fridge) that does change it to what spock is saying if you hook it up that way . I am sure the inverter is not wired to the battery convertor on the 120 side but if one made a hook up this way it does make a weird loop on the system.

I have a 1,000 watt inverter and it will send power to the converter.

Why is your inverter hooked to your converter?

You never have your inverter run your converter. This causes a bad electrical loop that will kill your batteries. This is a RV no no.

Usually if you have a factory inverter it is to feed the optional residential fridge only and will not feed converter....

I would be extremely surprised if the factory would install a 1,000 watt inverter feeding a 1200 watt, 65 amp converter. That is what I think 35RLs have. It would run for a second and immediately shut down!

Who has a 35RL? I have a 55amp converter but soon to be a 70amp converter

I do have an inverter and was told by service during PI that inverter will provide a trickle charge to the batteries as well as keep residential fridge running during travel. Is this not the case?

Not the case, it won't provide trickle charge to the battery, that should be achieved by the truck 12 volts charging supply.....

The inverter charging the batteries powering the inverter! Sounds like a perpetual motion machine! I'd like to have one of those.

Ok, the site team did a little edit on a few posts. We can play a little nicer than that since we are all buddies here. We are all here to help and learn, so let's please not lose sight of that.

I personally believe that a few subjects may be getting confused, as there are RV's that have only a converter, some that have both a separate converter and inverter, and some that have a combination inverter/charger.

Here are some schematics concerning the separate converter and inverter, and then the combination inverter/charger. As stated in the schematic for the separate converter and inverter, if there is no power from either the generator (if equipped) or shore power, then the link is broken going to the converter, so a properly wired RV will not have the converter powered by the inverter.

This information may be found here, along with much more good reading.

There's also converter in board or outboard from your dist panel.
