DO you use your Progressive Monitor when using a generator?
SO the previous thread about using the PI in parallel got me a thinking (and I got not want to hijack yet another thread!)... I do not use my PI unit when I am using my geni, never really thought it was needed. AM I WRONG? I was not really worried about the power coming out but as my little (yes very little) gears were turning in my head, I wondered if by running out of gas, lets say, on the geni could it cause a low voltage issue and damage something. I am using two eu2000 Honda's in parallel here, sometimes just one. They seem to just stop making power when the idle gets too rough or they start to shut down, but never actually looked at what was going on with the power output.
Any ways, thoughts?

For onboard gensets Progressive recommends to protect the shore line only and wire in before the transfer switch. I am thinking the same would apply to a stand alone genset.

So then I would surmise your answer is a no? Its stand alone and would be monitoring the power into the unit through the shore line but if I read your response correctly you are saying not to monitor any geni input.

Yes, sorry if it wasn't clear. Progressive says there is no danger in genset output. Only shore power.

On my Georgetown 337DS I hard wired the Progressive to the coach end of the shore line. When using the Onan, it feeds to an outlet and I plug the shore line to it. So the Progressive protects the Onan feed as well as campground feed. Why not have 100% protection?

Not sure of the reason. Perhaps because gensets don't cause an issue? But Progressive does recommend not protecting the genset feed.

It wouldn't be a low voltage.
More like. Stop voltage. Be the same as unplugging the cord.
If it ran out of fuel.

Only problem I have with using the PI while on generator is when at altitude and power is reduced. Sometimes it will cut off power when running microwave so I just flip the switch and bypass until I am done making bacon.

I've used my pi with gennie for 5 years with no issues.
Albeit a 7000 watt gennie not 2 unit paralleled .

I have a TRW Surge Protector hardwired in my FW and it is either feed by shore power or my genny. It runs fine on either power source.

With 2 hondas, I run an extended stay tank set-up......In summer heat, start 1 at about 8am and the other about 10: 30....shut them off at 10 pm......will run this way for 3 days and have gas lelt over......marine type gas tank with my own lash up....runs thru pi with no problems using the 'special grounding plug'

I have the extended tank as well. Have not made up the plug. Might be a winter 3 second project! Thanks all for the responses.

For the plug, i used a 30 amp plug so that the normal plug-ins would be free if needed.

If you use the 20 amp plug the breaker will kick out at 20 amp. If you get an adapter for the 30 amp plug on your Honda 2000 companion it will allow you to use the full 26 amps without tripping the breaker.
