Question Electrical surge

I am getting ready to purchase a surge protector for my RV But I am at a loss of which one to purchase. I know I need a 30 amp. But because I am new to all this stuff and this may sound naive, but what is the difference between a surge protector and a surge guard if any?
Also does the cost make a difference in the quality? Keep in mind I am trying to watch my spending so with that said I do not want to go crazy with costs.

To get the most protection I'd seriously consider a progressive industries ems hardwired unit.
LIFETIME WARRANTY.
MADE IN THE USA.
Pay a little more upfront !

You can install a 50 amp progressive industries ems hardwired in a 30 amp camper.
That way when u upgrade campers and it's 50 amp you can move it and not worry about selling the 30 amp for a loss.

Ok, that's funny. I will go ahead and edit Turbs post to correct the fat finger typo.

EDIT: He beat me to it.

Surge guard, surge protector...same thing...Having just gone through what you are doing right now...Can be a wide range of prices, depending what you want. Some people are happy with the portable style, where you simply plug into the power pedestal, plug into your trailer power supply and away you go. Others want the more permanent hard wired one, where they can have a display of amps being drawn, any error codes etc. Things to consider...are you confident in your ability to install a hard wired one? Or will you have to pay someone to do it? Is the display important to you? The hard wired one will be out sight, protected from thieves and the outdoor elements. Some of the portable ones don't offer a very high amount of surge protection, and some also won't automatically reset themselves after a power interruption or surge.
You are looking for more than just surge protection...you also want it to detect things like reverse polarity, ground faults, which most do except for the most basic ones.
You do sorta get what you pay for....do some searches in the forum here..there has been a ton of discussion on it of late.

Just to clarify, for those that are just beginning their research....Progressive Ind makes both a hard wired unit as well as a portable, so when people post they love their Progressive Ind,,they may not all be talking about the same unit.

FYI for Canadians. No portable surge protectors are sold in Canada, they lack CSA certification. The Hard Wired progressive are the only units CSA approved for sale.

I see. Comes in handy when the blender and Kegerator are both on.

I would not hookup without one, a portable 30AMP will cost about $279 and a 50 AMP about $330. The hardwired ones will be almost $100 less. Camping World has both and they will send it to you. You can't get by cheap, sorry. Please don't hookup without one and Good Luck.

X3 I would never consider hooking up without my Progressive EMS!

Another Tip: If you are a Good Sam's Club Member, many times throughout the year you can get items purchased at CW installed in your RV for free or at greatly reduced cost (in addition to getting a Good Sam discount at CW).

Not accurate...priced them out at 3 different RV dealers in Winnipeg just yesterday...they all had them in stock.
