Fuse Problem

Hey Everyone!

I have a fuse that continues to shut off as soon as I replace it causing my fuse box fan to not operate. I'm afraid that it might overheat because of it, any ideas on what may be causing this?

Not sure what you are calling your fuse box fan exactly. Can you state what make/model RV you have.

You may be referring to a converter fan, but this is all guesswork without more details or perhaps a pic. Have you recently replaced or hooked up a battery? What size fuse keeps blowing ......or are you perhaps talking about a circuit breaker tripping instead of a fuse?

Let us know more and I'm sure somebody can help you out.

Its a 2014 Prime Time Avenger, its currently hooked up, definitely a converter fan and a fuse not a circuit breaker, theres a slight spark, the fan turns on then it shuts off and the light turns red.
I'll try to upload a pic, but the description states is a lights 15 fuse.

What I was trying to get at, if it's the converter fan, which is a lot of time located right underneath the electrical distribution box in your RV, then it's possible if the fuse that perhaps goes to the battery reverse polarity fuse(s) is blowing, which would kill power coming out of the converter (and it's fan).

However, this only usually happens when you connect the battery wires backwards, thus the reason i was asking if you have connected/disconnected the battery recently.

Sure looks like there is a short in that circuit.....fan comes on as the current in the converter goes high then shuts down as fuses blows....red led lights up after fuse blows showing still a circuit continuity......you need to find where fault is in that circuit....if you do same without shore power, fan will not come on as it is only on battery power.....

Ah! I understand..How do I go about finding the fault in the circuit? And just to make sure I understand, the fan should not go on while I'm hooked? Only when using the battery?

The fan only operates when you are on shore power and converter is supplying load and batteries.....and to find the short in the circuit....well better have a friend that knows electrical and knows how to trouble shoot electrical faults....too long here to explain....

You said that the fuse is labeled 'lights'?

Are there any lights that don't work? Be sure to check the storage compartments and outside lights.

I have a 2013. HW277. Went camping last weekend and no problems. Used the oven so put the fantastic fan on. This weekend we set up and noticed red light on fuse blown. Removed blown fuse and when I tried to replace it with new one it Instantly popped .
Would appreciate any suggestions as I can't get any diagnostics paperwork.

Is the fuse for the fan or is it for some other circuit?

Does the fan not work now that the fuse is blown or is there another 12v item that doesn't work?

What does the identification label on the fuse box say the fuse is for?

Your converter should have something similar to this...

The fan comes on to cool off the converter, they don't like getting hot. The fan will come on whenever the converter is generating more than minimal DC current.

It is likely that you have a short somewhere in the circuit that is failing. You indicate that the circuit is labeled "lights". So you could have a connection in one of the lights or light switches that has come undone and the power lead is touching a ground. You check this by looking at each of them until you find the fault. If all of the connections are solid, you may have a wire where the insulation has worn off and the wire is touching your trailer frame or other ground. That will be much harder to find. One other place to look, I noticed when I installed my hardwired EMS that there are a number of buss bars for the DC circuits located behind the power center. A wire could have disconnected there causing the short circuit.

This old thread was resurrected by Marge221 in post # 10 with a completely different question.

Marge221 should have started a new thread instead of adding on to another's post where the two questions weren't really relevant.
