Generator

What size generator should I use to run my 30' 2015 Windjammer with 50 amp service? I am guessing at least 10,000 watts should work.

Thanks for any help.

Windjammer travel trailer? Almost all toy haulers with 50 amp service and two ACs use 5500 watt Onans. Ours did and it would run both ACs all day long.

10K will run your whole house with left over. That's a lot of juice!

10k, WOW!

That generator's noise level would run everyone out of the campground.

I'm pretty sure 50 amps at 120 volts equals 6000 watts, so it would seem that anything over a 6000 watt generator capability would be unused/wasted power. At 110 volts it equals 5500 watts.

That is total amps though??? 50 amp rv service is 50 amps per leg...so actually 100amps total. So op would probably still have some restrictions with a 10k genny, right?

My 6500 genny only has a 30 amp (twist lock genny 4 prong) service outlet on it and so that's what i installed on my house that we use it for. Can't do much with it being total electric in the country (water well and all) but its better than nothing!!

If you did not put stable protector in your gas that is probably the reason, your carburetor needs cleaning.

Is the champion 3100 quite enough to keep the neighbors happy?

I would be fine with it, as long as they didn't abuse generator hours.
I own an open frame Champion 3500w and would NOT be happy with that one in a campground.
It's WAY too loud for neighboring campers. That's why I use my Honda 2000w for campgrounds.

Yup, that should work for you and about 3 or 4 of your fellow campers. And.....if you let them plug in, they can't complain about the noise a 10,000 watt genny will be making.

There alot of areas and campgrounds that will not allow the use of open framed generators any longer,

Has anyone operated the Yamaha EU2000IS at 8000 +? I've read where they run good with re-jetting the carburetor? your thoughts appreciated!

Typical rule of thumb is to do down (leaener) one size in jet size for every 2000 feet. 99% of engines will run at high altitude without rejetting but you'll be wasting gas and will lose more than 3% in generator output for each 1000 ft gain in altitude.

Rejetting is VERY simple and even a former Marine can do it.

A properly jetted 2000 watt generator will only put out about 1500 watts at 8,000 feet....one that isn't jetted properly may put out 1200 watts max.

Thanks, I don't know, this one pretty thick but I did spend a few months in the motor pool so I think I can probably change the carb jet. That is, If it's not packaged so tightly that the thing has to be completely dismantled. I meant to say I heard they run pretty good without rejetting since the EPA has them running so lean already but I'm going to bring the proper jet along so I can do it on the road once I leave the flat land. Thanks for the help!

I use my Honda 2000 at 9k feet (I know different product). Point being, try it out before re jetting. I use my unit much more below 9k so I did not jet it. It does work well except for low voltage when I try to run microwave. So I can either bring my 2nd 2000 or turn off my PI EMS for the few moments it is running low voltage.

At 9000, does it run smooth, or is it hard to start or is the exhaust visible, like black? I really don't want to to have to change jets. I talked to a Yamaha dealer in Denver and he told me they sell the same unit that's sold at sea level. Yamaha doesn't even make a different jet, if a customer wants a high altitude jet, they get them after market.

Runs just fine. Just the microwave surge drops voltage below 104 for a moment and my EMS will kick off. No sense of hauling my other unit for just that. And yes the micro is a nescesity for my family-cleanest way to make bacon!
