Generator Install cost question

We purchased a new Sierra 380bh5 FIFTH WHEEL. As part of the deal we purchased a generator and install.

We were told that the trailer was prewired and they dealer gave us the cost to install.

This morning I got a call saying it would be another $2700. After me telling them to forget it, they called me back saying they would eat it but the sales person indicated that it would cost him and the service guy...

My wife and are fair people. I have three questions:

1) is 2700 to do the wiring reasonable or not?

2) assuming the answer above is yes, would agreeing to kick something additional in reasonable (fair).

3) should I be concerned about a disgruntled employee installing something that can kill me if not done right?

Thanks,

Thanks,

This is just my opinion.......

I agree with the fonz. 2700 is excessive, don't give in (salesman that don't know their products gets me worked up), if they screw something up wiring up the gen, it'll cost them more in the long run. I'm willing to bet the 2700 was quoted by a licensed electrician.

How much did they quote you to install gen? (Make/model)

For our 380bh5, i bought the twin yamaha ef2000is and parallel cable for 2100. And my yamis can back up our house if needed and are not fully committed to our camper

sounds like they were just seeing if they could make an extra $2700 off of you since they apparently were going to put it in whether you paid it or not.

Mustardbucket: how do you protect carbs on Yamahas when infrequent use? Any ez carb drain or run Stor Mor??

Going west again next year. Beautiful parks, pull outs, for 3 or 4 hour breaks. Need generator air.

They have fuel shut offs and it takes roughly 5-10mins for the carb to run out of fuel

If you already paid for genset, and install and Trailer is prewired. Then what's $2700 for? How much is it prewired and is it genset prep package. Meaning was there already a fuel tank and auto transfer switch installed. Even if it wasn't prewired or no genset prep package that price seems alittle steep.

Thanks to all. One clarification they originally said prewired when we negotiated the deal. A few days after we signed the paperwork they came back and said it was a mistake an not prewired and wanted the 2700. I miss understood my wife who said lets not do it, which i interpreted as let's not buy the 5er. She really meant let's not do the genny. So I called the dealer and said lets cancel the deal to which he responded (through the sales person) forget the money. Sales person implied it was going to cost him and he service manager. I get something extra over what they were already charging us seemed reasonable but not 2700.

Thanks to all for the responses. I'll let you know what we end up doing.

You guys are the best.

I wouldn't pay an extra dime. If they don't know what they sold you and "made a mistake", that's on them, not you

Dealer isn't loosing money that's for sure just their profit is cut a little. If they were losing $ when you said kill the deal they would of said ok done. Don't let them bully you into paying another dime.

the installation takes about 8 hours if there is nothing pre-wired i installed an onan 5500 watt in our rescue truck it took about 8 hours 2 men to install that is with passing the wire to the remote start in the cab of the truck and the install of gas tank it was gasoline model. I am strong believer that you do what you say you will do so if they said in the contract install included they must honor their contract. Having experience in fire investigation the first question asked who did the install and was there any problems with the contract. So i would not worry about them sabotaging the job. if they told you that the sales and service guy would have to pay it was to guilt you in to paying if you think someone is getting punished for an error in contract. If they make a mistake and overcharge you they aren't going to give you money back.

This all sounds a bit shady to me. I think they were just trying to get you to spend more money.

Vin.
