Generator Problems

We have a 2015 Cedar Creek Silverback with a Progressive Industries 50 amp surge protector. We cannot store it at our home, but do bring it home a day before departing on an adventure. In the driveway I have used and extension cord to get some power to the trailer. I hooked up a Champion 3000w generator to the trailer and got an error code for "open ground". The surge protector would not allow current to the RV.

What exactly is an "open ground" and is it something that can be easily corrected on the generator? If so, what are the steps to make corrections?

Thank you for your reply. Will try that later when the hardware store opens today. You have saved me $$$, as I was ready to go out and purchase another generator if the fix wasn't easy.
