Genset Problem

RV QG 4000. Running it for an hour each month with A/C on to load it. Won't make it to an hour. After about 40-45 minutes it shuts down. Not a low gas in the MH tank, it is full. Is there some kind of thermal cut off?

From my small engine and generator experience, this sounds like an ignition fault. Not knowing the age of your machine but figuring either 1 or 2 piece ignitions are going to be secured into an aluminum casting, you could be dealing with a faulty ground to either component or a bad CDI. In many cases you can run a spark tester in series with the plug and either it will run much worse or you may see it die on you, confirming and ignition fault. Briggs and Stratton 19051 or equivalent. You will need to remove the components and wire brush the ground mounting and reinstall. You might get lucky and not spend an arm and a leg

You could have the dastardly fuel pump issue. after the pump warms up it starts to fail. If that is the issue you will start to hear the pump clicking and then it begin to falter and then shut down. Common replacement part. It will then restart after it cools down and repeat the cycle.

It will also shut down from too high coolant temperature, make sure air flow is not restricted and also low oil pressure will cause it to shut down.

Genset Problem

Thank you everybody for your thoughts. The oil was just changed and I checked it is full. I left the basement door open and started it. A/C on. This time it only lasted 15 minutes. The machine only has 114 hours on it but is a 2008/09 model. Didn't want to restart right away. I'm thinking the fuel pump may be the culprit but guess I will see if I can find an Onan service center for further exploration. Thanks again.

With the low hours I would put a fuel filter on it and try it again. Gas sitting in the lines will gum up and clog the little filter.

Doesn't that unit have diagnostics on the circuit board? I'd check the owners manual and then take a look at the onboard diagnostics.

It does have diagnostics - a series of blinking lights on the control panel but nothing showed. BTW it started after an hour so really think fuel and I will change the filter.

If it took an hour before it restarted, doesn't really seem like a fuel problem, seems more like an over heating problem. Maybe needed that long to cool down ?

Had same problem. My gen set ran for 45 minutes then shut down. Thought it was an overheating problem so ran it with cabinet open and cover off, same result. Took it to Cummins and they diagnosed a bad fuel pump. Cummins tech said that he has seen this problem with the fuel pump a few times. Evidently the fuel pump heats up and causes the shut down. Replaced pump and running fine now.

I seem to be having a problem that is similar to this post. Every other week over the winter I ran the RV at 4000 for an hour and everything was ok. I line in NY so it was below freezing. Now the generator runs for 10 to 20 minutes stutters and shuts down. The last code I saw was 3 then 6. There is fuel in the tank. Any ideas I am 2 weeks away from a cross country trip.

Agree, first place to look is the fuel pump. Airteck makes a replacement better than the OEM. You can find your manuals here Index of /~n0nas/manuals/onan

Fuel goes bad. Did you add a fuel stabilizer before you stored the unit for the winter? Assume you have done the yearly service (change oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, new plugs). Most common problems are related to ethanol fuel, carburetors, and fuel pumps. Carburetors can not be rebuilt; replaced only.

First check for trash in the carb bowl. Pinch off incoming fuel line first.
You can also rebuild the carb. Get the right kit, take apart and soak in amonia for an hour. Blow out all the passages and put back together.

Thanks everybody on Friday I ordered fuel pump, air filter, and fuel filter from Amazon. Arrived today. I installed and then ran the generator for two hours. Worked like it's supposed to.

More help needed. On a major road trip. My generator works when not moving for hours. When I start to drive it runs about 20 minutes. Any ideas?
