Getting ready to fire up the Hondas for the first time...
Bought a Honda EU2000i and a EU2000i companion for when we boondock. Getting ready to fire them up for the first time. Already purchased magnetic dipsticks and oil change gizmo for them. Also - thinking about adding an hour meter, as I like to know how many hours my equipment has on it, for maintenance, etc. Any hints/tips/suggestions on the "proper" way to do so? Type of oil? Gas additives? Etc...
Any help would be appreciated.

Above all...pack an extra quart in your trailer. Mine was low on oil this weekend and kept shutting off- borrowed a quart from another camper.

If it will be sitting unused for extended periods, consider non-ethanol gasoline. Not being hydrophilic, the likelihood of water condensing in the fuel system is low. A friend of mine swears by it for ALL small engines but, if used regularly, I don't see the point.
If non-ethanol gas is not available or impractical to obtain, definitely use a fuel stabilizer of some kind or drain it completely.

From experience and info from the local Honda repair facility....when storing for any period longer than a month or two, make sure there is a fuel stabilizer such as Stabil (but they actually recommended Sea Foam) in the fuel, run the fuel out and then open up the maintenance cover, and drain the fuel out of the carb's fuel bowl.
And yes, pure gas is the best....

I always use Sea Foam in my garden tractor and yard tools. But I usually go through gas fast enough that it doesn't sit long. This seems like a good time to try ethanol free gas.

Marine gas is non-ethanol, but sometimes hard to come by unless you live near the coast or bodies of water. I have always used Sea Foam in every motor I own whether or not I plan to use it for any extended period of time. The stuff isn't cheap, but it works. Ethanol is a moisture magnet and will destroy many engine parts.

Fortunately, we live near the Ohio river. Shouldn't be hard to find marine gas at the marina. Yeah, SeaFoam is good stuff!

I've been using Mobil 1 oil in my Honda's since I bought them new. I've never had any problems with low oil but I do always carry a quart of oil with us. At the end of the year, I change the oil, empty the fuel tank and drain the carburetor. Then their good to go when I fire them up the next spring. As for gas Ive always used what ever gas is available for them. It's hard to find gas in certain areas that don't have ethanol in it. Besides, these newer motors have hardened valves and seats in them so you can burn almost any type of gas.

The reason for using non-ethanol gas is not because of how it runs in the engine, but because the ethanol attracts water which, with prolonged idle exposure, can damage engine parts. If you use gas with ethanol but your generator's always busy, it never has a chance to absorb water, so it doesn't really matter.

KCJoe1, pardon me if I don't say this right (I'm NOT a mechanic) but I've heard that you shouldn't use synthetic oil in a brand new engine because it doesn't allow the rings to seat (or something to that effect). You should wait until it's well broken in and then start using it. Am I wrong on this?

An old myth. Use the correct grade and viscosity of oil, as per mfgrs specs. Most of the GM spec'ed Dexos 1 oil is synthetic, with a few left over that are syn blends.
Corvettes came from the factory with syn oil for many years now. Many other vehicles do too. My dealer in Moab used 100% synthetic Dexos oil for service.

I have switched from (Sea Foam) to (StarTron) in all our Engines 2 stroke and 4 stroke Damm we have a (LOT) of Engines!  Youroo!!

Oils have come a long ways since the dark ages. I've been using synthetic oils since they came out. Remember slick 50? This stuff was great back in the day. I did a lot of tests with different engines using it. Over the years the price of synthetic oils have dropped and are used now more then ever. Even my 2 cycle oil mix is synthetic oil. I was using Rotella oil in my truck but now that some of the equipment has fallen off of it, I switched it over to Amsoil- another synthetic. So come into the future. Synthetic oils work.

My reply was what I do for the winter time. Mine only get used when we're racing and no power around. We camp at the far end of track because of pit space, and the family hangs out there, as I swipe the trike (scooter) so I don't have to walk back and forth.......the golf cart stays with the race car. I change the oil depending on hours run (est.), but check it before leaving home and carry a quart incase....... not like there's not any around if needed. Oils discussions are like tires, In my case, cars w/ nitrous are using cheating horsepower and mine being blown, I consider being real horsepower...... all depends on whom your talking to.
