No problem, I was just confused by your numbers. My PI surge protector shows running amps around 14 for the A/C, not sure of the start up draw as it is momentary.

You have an amazing AC if it only draws 8 amps on startup.

Here is the amp draw when starting my Coleman Mach III WITH the hard start mods.

Note the metering unit only samples the amperage at 0.5 seconds so the instantaneous readings at the locked rotor startup could even be higher.

The power being used when the switch was turned on was 2.8 amps and the compressor alone went to 24.9 (22.1 from the compressor) at the first sampling. The second sampling was 13.5 (10.6 amps from the compressor), and the compressor "on speed" reading was 9.9 amps (7 amps from the compressor alone). Then the fan motor starts and the amperage draw jumps back up to 16.1 amps (2.8 from the camper, 7 from the running compressor and 6.3 amps just from fan motor startup). With everything up to speed (about 12 amps), the fan motor and compressor (minus the camper draw) is drawing 9.1 amps.

Notable is that without the delay relay, the startup amps of both the fan motor and the compressor would occur at the same time. That amperage would be 22.1 plus 6.3; or 28.4 amps instantaneous.

When dealing with inverter generators, they are NOT over amp tolerant like AC circuit breakers. AC Circuit breakers need to be overloaded for a short period for them to heat up enough to trip. Not so generator inverters that trip off on instantaneous overloads.

That is why with a 30 amp camper, you may not be able to run the microwave and the AC at the same time.

Thanks Herk. Those numbers are more in line with what I would expect to see. Great analysis!

Edited to correct autocorrects interpretation of Herks name. Lol

Herk, Do you have pictures of your fan delay installation? Maybe from an old post or somewhere you can direct me to. I would like to see the wires hooked to the delay box. Easier for me to see than imagine......Thanks

I will take some photos this week, but the relay is just screwed to a handy piece of structure in the intake plenum for ease of access. (use a razor knife to carefully cut the sealant around the air handler to prevent the sealant from tearing the ceiling paper when you drop it to get access to the thermostat wires). BE SURE to re-seal the air handler to the ceiling to prevent a dirty ceiling from leaking air.

In the Fan delay relay thread, look at TURBS post #10 (the way mine displays) where he has a photo of the thermostat wires. ALL you need to do is insert the relay contacts in between the FAN control thermostat wire and the air conditioner's fan control board. Adjust the fan delay to about 2 seconds (in my relay almost completely counter clockwise) so the compressor starts a few seconds before the blower. That way you will hear the compressor start. If you delay the compressor, you will not be able to adjust the timer because of blower noise.

OK...Rechecked amp pull...8 being what is being used now without A/C.....When A/C comes on, goes to 18 amps....
I'm located in this park at the end of electrical run......Lots of other folks between me and the power station, as the readout now showing line voltage of 109...

That is getting low on voltage. You PMS will shut it off it drops much lower. I wonder what it is during the hot summer when everyone is running their A/C on full blast?

When the RV show was here, I lost power constantly, so I just switch to generator in mornings and evenings

If you watch your power usage, an autotransformer will increase and stabilize your voltage at the cost of about an amp of current.

Higher voltage means less current used by the air conditioner during startup since "wattage" starts the motors (inductive load).

A sad day but Frank, the owner of Franks Electronics - maker of my 2 stage autotransformer, passed away and no longer makes autotransformers.
Here was my review http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...ers-26202.html

Hughes still makes a one stage unit.
