I, too, would be concerned about the interior romex ran on an exterior wall. UF cable would be safer.

I'll look into that babock. Yeah, I couldn't find anything saying the larger rated outlet was against code either. But an electrician buddy told me it could go either way with an electrical inspection. What should I do about the romex routing? Bear in mind, this is a shed, not a dwelling. I'm guessing is your concern is the romex between studs being up against the sheeting and susceptible to somebody screwing or nailing into it from the outside.

If it were me, anything exposed in a garage would be in conduit just for damage considerations. During the last few minutes, been doing some searches and it does seem to go either way.
As far as the 30A plug on a 20A circuit. I would be labeling the inside of the box near the receptacle as such just to prevent 30A loads being put on that circuit.

4 out of 5 electricians can't be wrong! (Remember the old Dentyne commercials? Four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum? So who was this fifth dentist who said they should chew sugar gum? lol). Babock, I do intend to label it 'For 20 amp max load only', just in case I drop dead or something.

I did a 30A in my garage and to save the cost of a Weather proof box I just mounted the plug on the inside wall in a standard box right by the garage door and then I bought a Hatchway for TT's...the same as the ones you push your RV elec cord into for storage. Cord runs thru hatch and to TT and outlet is protected from the weather.

You can plug a 30 amp into it and use it safely all day long. As long as you don't go over 20 amps it will be fine. Cross the 20 amp limit and the 20 amp breaker will trip. Not a problem. No different then using a 30 to 50 amp dog bone.

Wolfpaq, my weatherproof Eaton box and receptacle was 28 bucks at Lowe's I believe. I know you already have a solution, but this does not negate my need to gloat at spending less than somebody else!

I totally understand that. It's for the next owner of the house that needs to know that.
