Water damage
As much as I love my PI 50 amp portable ems I have had to send it back twice after water got inside after heavy rains. I came up with a cheap solution that works ok when I remember to put it on if its going to be rainy. I use a plastic garden bucket that I cut a slit in the side of, and install it over the top cable on the EMS. Wish that I didn't need to do this. Poor photo but you get the idea

I have left my SurgeGuard out, exposed to all elements the mid-Atlantic has to offer, for 365 days a year since 2012. No cover necessary. No worries.

I never considered covering my Surge Guard. Now, granted I have only been camping with it for about 20 nights and I do leave it plugged in 24/7 when it is in my drive. It has been rained on and snowed on. I have not had an issue yet. I take normal precautions (don't lay it in a puddle etc) but nothing extra ordinary.

I left my PI EMS-PT50C in the Goshen Monsoon and Lake Creation Event for a week. Not a bruise, a sigh, a hiccup, or diddley. Sometimes I disco the anaconda cable and just leave my EMS connected, throw in back of truck.............and if I hit a driving rainstorm, I don't worry about it.

X2 on contractor plastic bag. It also protects the trailer plug connection. May offer a little opportunistic theft protection as well.

I had mine in a large zip-lock bag last winter with no overheating issues, but the bag had holes and was not watertight. The bag lasted about 4 weekend trips before replacing. I like the bucket in post 21 and will try that this year instead of the bag. But if I didn't have a bucket handy and only a bag I'd just make sure it can breath.

I have had my 50amp portable unit leak twice, Matthew did this damage. Since I don't live to far from Apex NC I took the unit back and this is what they gave me. The PI has saved my camper three times, I don't leave home without it.

That looks good. I'm curiouos if they were able to add that on to the existing case or if it is an entirely new case?
Thanks!

This was not a new one, it was reconditioned. They said it had mostly new parts. It was the third time back to the factory. They told me this one was more water resistance

That is what they are selling now, got rid of the non-WR ones. I have one of the old open ones and just use it. Never had an issue. Now I would not lay it in a puddle but 6 years now and all good.

I use a 1 gallon zip lock bag.
I cut a ~ 4" vertical slit (enough for the plug to fit through) starting about 2" from the bottom of the bag and ending about 6" from the bottom. In other words, put the slit on one side of the bag. Then I reinforced the end of the slit with Gorilla tape.
Put the plug through the slit with the bag upside down, the slit side of the bag to the rear of the EMS and leave the bag unzipped for ventilation.
Water that gets through the slit will drain to the rear of the EMS, away from the display and plug receptacle. I have looked at the EMS after heavy rain and it was dry.
