How to stop battery theft?

Well just got back from buying new battery after going to storage to start the fridge for our trip tomorrow morning. Pulled up to the trailer and saw the battery strap hanging down so I knew immediately I had been hit.

Any ideas on how to lock battery to frame?

I know this is a pain but the only sure way is to buy some quick disconnect couplers and take it with you. Sad that it has to come to that. the only other thing that comes to mind is having a locking bracket fabricated that would cage the battery to the framing.

This is what I made and it worked great. Made similar ones for all my trailers dating back to 1976 and never lost a battery. Also had 4 sheet metal screws in the bottom of both battery boxes.

1/2" sq steel rod, welder, 1/2 threaded rod drilled to accept a padlock, 1/2" nut. Bend the 1/2" sq rod to form a leg to match the box tops. Drill a 17/32" dia hole between the boxes and assemble.

I am the one who also got hit & started a thread in the hybrid forum. I found a local company that also sells through the internet. Here is the link for their site, with pics of their product. Picked them up & got them installed. Looks like it should do the job. Just a pain & another expense for the battery, locks, boxes, & padlocks. B & D RV Battery Lock For RV travel trailers and popup campers.

rbq thanks for the info.

Sad items like this have to be made and purchased! dunnnc's method has been running through my mind along with other ideas. Wish this had not happened to either one of us!

Got the lock from B&D. It should stop them from stealing the battery easily!

If you are paying for storage, they should have cameras monitoring the site.

We do pay, but they don't have cameras on the trailer lot, just indoor storage areas. I told the owner if I can buy a $26 lock he should be able to buy a couple of extra cameras to watch the lot...we'll see.

Is the clasp and lock a set? How secure is the bottom of the clasp? Any change it could easily be spread open and removed from the bottom?

Terrier it is just the bracket that goes around the L-brackets the bracket box sets on. I added the lock, one of four that opens with the same key. The lock bracket is pretty beefy, could the bracket be opened from the bottom, maybe but it would have be a pretty good pry bar....I believe they would try and break the lock first because of available space to use force on a tool.

I am just trying to make them skip mine and go for something easier!

Now to find a ball coupler lock so they can't bypass the latch lock, x-chocks with locks, and the club wheel lock. Anyone have a 2 5/8 ball lock that works?

I did not come up with the lead but rbq did, thanks go to him!

I got it. Where did you get the locks? Sorry about all the questions but this is something I am wanting to get for my trailer for the same reason you stated.

When we had a tongue trailer, I took an old 2-5/16" ball, cut the shank off and drilled & filed the tongue latch out large enough to insert a Master lock, inserted the modified ball and latched and locked it.. Never lost a trailer!

Terier I got it from http://www.b-drvbatterylock.com/

Dunnnc my latch has the same master lock as the battery locking bracket now. I will have to find a ball and see what I can do. Reciprocating saw? Hack saw? Drill hole in shaft and put a lock in the shaft?
