Thanks for the suggestion on the high altitude jets. I'll call them today to see if they'll send me some. I'll report back with an update once I get them.

You could try something like this.[URL]id144248.webhosting.optonline.net/microair.net/merchantmanager/product_info.php?cPath=4&products_id/URL]

I emailed Champion last night and here's the response I got:

We do not have a jet available for this size engine, however you can add some holes to your air filter cover (drill 3 to 5 holes to allow for better breathing) and you can remove the spark arrestor from the muffler. If the spark arrester is required at your campground then be sure you clean it before your trip. Also, clean your spark plug at every 50 hours as well. You can also move to a hotter spark plug and you can close the spark plug gap to 0.018 to 0.020.

So I called them to confirm and the guy I spoke with said the same. He also said the 2000's in parallel are rated to run/start the 15k AC AT SEA LEVEL. He said above 5k elevation they're losing 12-15% of rated output and they probably won't start the AC.

So there I have it. Time to drop another $2k+ on a bigger generator or live without AC.

I have to wonder if your parallel cable is bad. Isn't the whole point is that it combines the two together so you have 3400 watts to use? If so you should have no trouble even if only 3000 watts are available.

Look for soft start devices

Just because they don't have one doesn't mean a different jet is not available. I doubt the carb or jets on the motor is proprietary. Remove the jet or get the carb mfr/model number and contact any motorcycle/snowmobile/lawnmower/etc dealer to see if it can be cross referenced.

Also, check out this document. It shows high altitude jets.

Re jetting

Listen after racing go-carts with my daughter in the World Karting Association all over the country I have learned a thing or two about re-jetting a carborator.
My recommendation is buy a set of OEM jets and a set of pin drill bits.
Using the pin bits find the drill bit that fits the hole in the OEM jet.
Now comes the trial and error
Take the next size bit and enlarge the hole by turning the bit with your fingers till you drill through the jet.
Install jet test unit.
If desired results are not achieved repeat above steps till they are.
Just as a side note buy a couple extra jets.

At sea level you have 3400 watts.

For every 1000 foot gain in altitude you have 3% loss in engine power and 3% loss in electrical generation capacity PROVIDED you have the desired air/fuel mixture (jetting) at that altitude. Since you are not rejected, you are probaly losing more than 5% in electrical generation capacity.

Your best bet is to lean our your jets.

On my Boliy generator, I removed the jet, soldered it shut, and redrilled a smaller hole in it. I then and check plug for mixture and resoldered-redrilled again as necessary.

On another note: Where the heck are you camping in CO that requires airconditioning? We never run a/c in CO where we boondock in the back country and we always run heat each night ;-)

I may try messing with the jets myself but with my luck I'd make it worse haha.

I'm in NM, and we have several trips planned for Elephant Butte lake this summer. No shade and regularly 100+ even at 4500'. With a "needy" wife and two young girls I'll definitely need the AC. I could just plug in but that's boring!
