Plugging my 30amp trailer into a 50amp pedestal -- any concerns?

Looks like the campground I'm headed to this weekend only has 50amp shore power. Other than buying the adapter for my 30amp cord, do I need to do anything else? Anything I should NOT do? Does the converter automatically handle the power?

Edit: sorry for the spelling of "pedestal" in the title!

That's a switch from my experience so far - seems like some CG's have more 30 amp shore power than 50 amps.

As stated before - just get an adapter.

I would like to add to my previous post that I found while looking in the Resorts Of Distinction and Coast To Coast catalogs that several of their CG's seem to have more 30 amps than 50 amps outlets.

You'd think right? Not the case this time though. Maybe we're just "spoiled" here in Colorado. Look at the right-most column:

I would think that column would mean they offer up to 50 (including 30 amp) on that site. No?!?! Almost all the 50 amp poles I've seen usually have 30 as well. Maybe that's just down south though.

Ah, I see! So the pedestal likely has both a 50amp AND a 30amp connection? Can you tell I'm new to a lot of this?

That's been my experience too. Most of the parks that I've been to that offered 50amp, would also have a 30amp and a 20amp on the pole as well. I don't think I've even seen a box with just a 50amp. But then I don't hang out in the upper class neighborhoods either.

This comes up fairly often.

The vast majority of power posts that have 50 amp sockets also
have a 30 and a duplex receptacle.
Once in a while you will find one that is just 50 amp and nothing more.

A 30 to 50 adapter from WallyWorld is a good thing to add to your
RV equipment list.

I have never seen a 50amp box without a 30amp outlet in it. 50amp is really nothing more than 2 30amp legs in the RV usage model

Most campgrounds use a 50 amp box like this one. Note that it also has a 30 amp plug and a 20 amp duplex plug.

On the off chance you do need to use the 50 amp socket, like a bad 30 amp outlet (or it ONLY has the 50 amp outlet - very rare); a 50 to 30 pigtail adapter is all you need.

The camper folder is about 2 gigabytes of PDFs and photos; and getting bigger every day. Just took some photos of the start of the power awning remote installation (but it got windy) and the photo of the pin box current limiter. Will post that one when I get it out of the camera.

I have seen 50 and 30 amps on the same box but I can't say I have seen any 20 or 30 on the same box at the cgs I have been to.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the electrical boxes looked like the one in the photo that Herk posted. Normally when I open the cover on the electrical box at a campsite I'm wearing gloves and I'm ready to duck or run. Spiders, hornets, and all manner of other critters love to live in those boxes.

It doesn't matter, as long as you have a 50-to-30 pigtail. Your RV will draw what it's designed to draw. If it can manage on 15 Amps, that's what it will pull. I had an ammeter on mine at one CG and we were only pulling 5A off a 50A supply, because that's all we had running.

The only negative is that, if you have dual a/c's, they still won't recognise that you can run both together on shore power, because your MH thinks it's still a 30A rig.
