So let's recap a little. I'm seeing how it should be wired, but I have the wrong wire. I'm understanding the problem better now though it's not quite crystal.

Study the wiring diagrams provided by wmtire.

OK.. In this diagram there are four wires coming into this box. The black and red down from the top, a white connected to the bar that's close to the 50 Amp plug and the bare wire connected to the side bar. Now... The wire we used only has three wires, the two wires coming from the top and only a bare wire, the wire we used does not have the white wire. We have the two coming from the top and had the bare wire connected to the bar close to the side of the box.. It didn't work. So we changed the bare wire from the outside bar to the bar closest to the 50 Amp plug. This is where we are now. So basically we need different wire, one with four wires and connect them as in this diagram... Correct??

You really need to stop guessing and experimenting and get someone over there that understands wiring. I would be glad to help if I were there, but I'm not. I'm afraid to offer additional advice that may just lead to more experimenting. I do wish you well.

Whitaker, how was it wired when you burned up your car charger? Just changing the ground wire from the neutral bus to ground bus, shouldn't have done that. I'm thinking there was something else done to cause this, which you may not be recalling. It's hard to say without being there or seeing actual pics.

No the only wire we switched was the bare wire from the block closest to the outside of the box in the above diagram to the bar closest to the 50 Amp plug.

I know and I respect your opinion. But looking back I was guessing, now I'm researching and getting help. Thanks.. Right now at the moment I'm not doing anything but research. I'll get it straight and checked BEFORE I power up anything.

Next question.. If the only wire that is missing from this three wire 10 2 is a ground, couldnt we just drive a piece of rebar in the ground and ground the box using earth ground?

This is not correct for almost all cases. There is not a 30A feed and a 50A feed to the dual pedestals. There is a 50A 220V feed that is wired in the pedestal as either a 30A 120V ( 3 Pin) or two 50A 120V (4 pin) circuits. The 50A outlet may get less physical usage.
Your diesel mechanic friend may be smart, but based on the discussion so far, he is going to cost you more than you will save by calling an electrician.

Whitaker, you need to stop questioning the good advice people are giving you, please.
Connecting a 10/2 wire to your 50 Amp service is a code violation, highly dangerous as in having a very high potential of killing someone, which I'm sure you don't want to happen. It does not matter whether you're planning to plug in a 30 Amp or 50 Amp trailer cord - period.
Please call a certified electrician!!!

Whitaker, I commend you for trying to learn, which is helpful to your situation. However, I feel we are now talking in circles. It's already been explained what you are missing (it's not the ground) and what the bare wire is.

Possibly. What size/gauge wire are you now going to use to run the 30 feet from your house panel to the subpanel?

Not sure yet. Researching that now but it will surely be the correct wire. No worries about burning anything up. Hard lessons are the ones that stick. It'll be right. Thanks for all the help.

OK I just spoke with a different friend of mine, ex electrician. I know for sure he knows his stuff. He told me to run 100 Amp wire.

Ask him to translate that into what gauge?

Anyway, you could possibly get him over to your house and let him do this for you. Maybe bribe him with a home cooked meal or such. LOL

He said 6 guage copper or 4 guage aluminum. He said cost wise he would just run 100 Amp mobile home feed wire. He said it's 2 guage.
