Power converter charging at 250 vDC

Before heading out on our trip next week I decided to test my battery. Turns out it is completely dead. The camper has been plugged in at the house for the last month so I thought that it should have been charged.

I was able to put my battery on a battery charger in the garage and get it up to 13 volts but it has zero mca and only 36 cca. So it definitely needs replacing.

The crazy thing is that when testing the converters charging capability it tests at 251 volts dc instead of the usual 13ish volts. Something with the 8955 is screwed up.

Is there anything that can be done to fix it or does it need replaced as well? My guess is that it fried the battery.

Thanks
Jason

It's pretty impossible for the converter to put out 251 volts DC. Are you sure it wasn't .251 VDC.

Since you get 13 VDC at the converter, I'd say the problem is the fuse/resettable breaker near the battery or the battery disconnect.

Since you don't indicate which RV or even type of RV you have, I can't tell you where to start looking for it, but it should be somewhere near the battery.

ID:	154057I agree that 250 volts is impossible lol. I just replaced the resettable breakers and it appears to have fixed the problem.

Still don't know why it was reading such a high voltage

It is said that seeing is believing but I still have a hard time believing such a reading could it be the meter?

No the meter seems to be good. I get 13.6 volts everywhere except for at the battery cable. After I changed out the switchable breakers everything seems to be fine. Getting a good 13.6 volt reading now. I have no clue how it was getting a 200+ volt reading before.

Since the meter is set to 'Auto' range, it may be mV that it's reading. I can't see the range on the far right side of the display due to the glare on it.

I have a few meters that will read like that and if you aren't careful to look at the range you'll be thinking volts and it'll be reading mV.

You know what that makes sense it is reading mV. Lol I am an idiot. Now it all makes sense. The breaker was broken so it wasn't getting any power hence the 200+ mV. I just didn't pay any attention to the mV.

Thanks everyone

I'm just glad it was as simple as replacing a breaker or fuse.

Thanks for sticking with us till the end.

Being a switching supply I would think if it went into runaway it may produce that much voltage but at uA's....

I had an open connection(charging wire) on a Dodge p/u break one time. Gauges went haywire and I checked the alternator output...38+ volts. Alternator man said “it full fielded”. Maybe bad connection on 120VAC to 12VDC would do similar.

The water level on my battery was fine. My guess is that the breaker/fuse had been broken for so long that the battery drained of power and now wouldnt take a charge. In May I had a VA state inspection and the battery had at least enough power to engage the brakes.

A new battery and two auto resettable breakers and everything is working as it should.

Hi. It had to be 250 mv if it was 250volts. The battery would be boiled out and all the items that are wired in the camper to the 12 v system would be blown out and burnt

It is impossible to get 200+ volts DC from 120 vac. If NOTHING blew the most you could get would be 120....but the diods would hold it to their value or blow.......IMPOSSIBLE.
