Power Surge Cord

Does one really need a power surge cord to check and monitor power problems in an RV park? I have heard it is a good idea and if so what is the best one without having to take out a loan?? Some of them are pretty pricey!

if u running 30 amp, it is quiet easy to adapt the campground power to a 15 amp socket (like in ur house) and plug a tester into it (mine is yellow and has 3 lights on it) depending on what lights are lit, it will tell u if the circuit is wired correctly. that would be the min i would recommend. that tester is less than $5.

i also have an eaton surge suppressor wired into mine. cost was abt $100 once i wired it in. the suppressor *alone) was abt $70.
you can read horror stories on here abt how someone had their bacon saved by having one. i have yet to experience that.

the image above with 2 lights on is a good circuit.
the lower image, with one light, has an open ground.

actually, u could adapt 50amp down to a 15 amp plug and see if the ground, neutral, and one leg is wired correctly. if it is, u can assume the other leg is ok.

there is another unit out there other than the progressive industries that is sold by campingworld. once it shows all correct and sets the contacter, it can take 8 seconds for it to disconnect if the voltage goes high. i have yet to run a test to see what will happen if the neutral is opened after the contacter closes (provides power to camper). if ur running 50 amps, that can be life changing.
the progressive industries unit seems to be the one that most, on here, recommend. i haven't read any of their specs or run any test on one.

X2 and the one with the monitor allow for you to monitor what is going on with your unit and will prevent the problems that can blow all the electric stuff in your unit...

It's kinda mesmerizing to look at.

While in Waco recently, some poor guy who didn't believe in surge protectors, wound up with his MH elect system being fried. Apparently, a wire crossed inside this broken down shore pwr box, gave him 220 instead of 120. Not a pretty sight. I also have a polarity checker.

After reading posts on FFR I realized all of my electronics at home are protected, so it only makes sense to protect the electronics in the tt.

I purchased the Progressive Industries 30 amp EMS unit.

Not only do we use the PI, we also have each electronic unit plugged into its own secondary TVSS. Our converter and inverter also have built in TVSS protection.
I do not plug in until I have checked the park pedestal. Also working on making a buddy box for those times when I need to scab from multiple outlets.

When we order our 2013 Cedar Creek 30RL we had a 50 amp surge protector hard wire inside the unit.

Another vote for Progressive.

They have features that the brand Camping World sales don't have. These folks are who I bought from and they are very knowledgeable and can answer any questions.

Go with PI

I too recommend the Progressive Industries. I purchased the hard-wire version, but then installed it in my basement where the elec. goes into the coach as if it were one of their portable (i.e. stealable ) units.

Following others' advice here on the forum, I "converted" mine to a pseuto-portable by bolting it to the inside of the elec. basement storage area, and installing the appropriate 50A male and female plugs/pigtails. That way, if I am unfortunate enough to somehow fry the PI unit, I can move to another camp ground with reliable electricity, switch around my plugs so that I bypasss my (now dead, hypothetically) PI surge, and still finish out the weekend--albeit without surge protection until I'm able to get my PI unit replaced.
