Progressive Industries SSP-30XL Portable 30 Amp RV Smart Surge - message?

Hello,

So, we were at my brothers house and didn't have an ideal situation for plugging into power (long story) so we plugged into what he said was a 20 amp dedicated outlet that was intended for an electric fireplace (not yet installed)

We had the Progressive industries SSP 30XL portable 30 amp smart surge on our end. The lights showed Green & Red - which indicated "reversed polarity"

To make matters worse, we (stupid I know...) turned our A/C on because it was HOT; it ran for a little bit and popped a breaker on their house, so we didn't run it again (hoping we didn't damage the unit?)

Can anyone tell me what exactly that reversed polarity meant, AND, is there any chance we damaged our A/C unit?

I'll apologize in advance by requesting you "dumb your answer down as much as possible so I can understand the answer"

Thanks!!

As far as I know it should not have hurt your a/c. You were just drawing more than the 20 amp circuit could handle.
Reversed polarity does create a shock hazard. It could even ground thru your trailer frame and shock you. Those red lights on you P.I. are telling you NO!.
Read this:What is reversed polarity at an outlet/receptacle? Why is it dangerous?

that's a nice little article that bob213 posted.

I would not think that the a/c was damaged. you should be ok. but have your brother check out that circuit. if it was done by an electrician shame on them! if done by your brother he needs to invest in one of those little circuit testers ($10) and verify all his work! then go verify every receptacle in the house!

Thanks! I always appreciate the helpful info we receive

I "think" my brother was working in conjunction with the electrician (another long story - family member journeyman electrician is doing the job in pieces as time allows - he lives 300 miles from my brothers place, but too has a vacation place nearby, so he gets up there "fairly" regularly) and most likely done by my brother as the job is NOT finished yet, nor has it had a final inspection......

Anyway, thanks a ton!

I had an extension cord that was reversed for years. Never knew until I saw the reversed polarity lights. Powered everything under the sun with that cord.

Think of a coffee maker with a metal base next to the sink and water is spilled on the counter. It can KILL.
