Best to try and search for this and have a good read.
I added a 50a hard wired version on my new fiver. Its helped alert me to problem wiring twice in the last month. Basically it protects your camper power and electric systems from; low and high voltage, surges, mis wired pedestals, etc. many have plugged a 30a trailer into a 240v welder outlet and fried many expensive electric components.
Personally, I won't go without. But, it was hard to spend the $$ when its not a cool hands on device

Here's one thread.

Power Surge Protector

I have an ems hardwired in my camper and actually glad today as power dipped below 106 at 3pm.
The ems shut power off about 10 minutes later was back to 110

Wouldn't hook up to campground power pedestal without mine. I went with the 30AMP portable after I read all the positive comments on the company and products.

I use the progressive as well. I found one on Craigslist that was only 6 months old and used a couple times. The seller was older and was getting out of Rv life for health reasons. Paid $75 for the unit over a year ago and it has performed flawlessly. I don't plug in my Rv unless the progressive is in place. I currently have my Rv parked at home preparing for a trip and the progressive is online as I type this. Thumbs up!

We use a PI EMS as well. It is more than just a surge protector. It monitors volts, amps and checks for opens and ground faults. Ares are not hard wired. Wouldn't hook up without one!

I have a 50amp portable and have used it twice. I look at it like insurance and do sleep better at night. I also appreciate the fact its American made and has a lifetime warranty. my RV travel buddy purchased one at the same time I did for his class A.His did not work. he called the service # and did get an answer on a Sat. Immediately the guy said we need to send you another one. Call the office on Mon and tell.them Tommy said to send u a replacement ASAP.
My buddy said "you sure that is all I need to tell them" He said.."They better, I own the company"..Now thats service and often does that happen? I'm sold for life!!!
