progressive surge protector with generator

I have a permanent installed progressive surge protector (30 amp) and just bought a Generac 2000 portable generator from Costco. After going online and finding the fix for Error code 2 (No ground) the Progressive now will not let the generator online for code 4 (low voltage). It reads 122v with no load but must be dropping below threshold when trailer powered. I have everything turned off so must be battery charger pulling it down. My question is does anyone have a 2000w portable generator successfully powering their trailer through a Progressive 30amp Surge protector? I'm trying to find out if it's just the Generac having issues. Thanks.

Yes, I use a Honda eu2000 and run the whole trailer minus the A/C. Now this is not using a hair dryer, micro and all at once. But it runs the lights, fridge and converter. Converter pulls 8 amps I think depending on its load and all, might try running fridge on propane only. I knew my PI has shown under 122 and not shut off.

The PI web site has a FAQ section that addresses how to hook up the EMS with a generator for your situation. Might help.

Thanks for quick response. Just to confirm this is with a Progressive surge protector inline?

Yep, was just on there today as I have a new portable EMS 30 to see if I could get remote monitoring, but only comes with hardwired variety.
Q: Should a Hardwired EMS be installed before or after the transfer switch?
A: A hardwired EMS should be installed prior to the transfer switch. The reason for this is most RV generators already have built-in voltage and frequency protection. If the EMS is installed after the transfer switch, this leaves the transfer switch vulnerable to power problems.

Yep, I am not using a transfer switch. Just trying to plug trailer into generator. Doesn't look like that's going to work with the PI. Oh well, nothing is easy with RV'S. That's why we love them!

Boy, you said a mouthful there. Today I am wondering why my A/C setting has to be dropped lower to cool more, but the frig has to be set higher to cool more. Couldn't we have some consistency somewhere?

No problems here: glad I got the PI EMS unit. Working in my driveway with camper and now I can see exactly the amps each appliance is pulling. Better to play in the driveway than mess up at the campgrounds. Also got a major piece of chain link and lock to secure PI to the post at campgrounds.

Your generac may be dropping voltage under 104 when a load is put on it. My Honda 2000 will do it when I run the microwave at 9000 ft altitude other than that it's fine.

My first genny was a Honeywell which was made by generac. Would not even power the microwave. Returned it to Costco after 2 mths with box and got full refund. Bought Honda after that.

I say return the generac and get a champion 2000. Many members here say they are great and close to same price.

There is a disclaimer for the Yamaha 2000 it doesn't have enough start up amps(?), and could damage unit. There is a bypass jumper wire inside your PI unit watch video on hooking it up. Be careful jumper is a blue wire and there are 2 of them. PI sells a bypass switch that installs in place of jumper or you can make one yourself.

Wow, that link to Amazon is over twice the regular price for that model. They average around $550-600 US.

Thanks Hondaman. That is what's happening. I see the overload led flash when the PI tries to connect it. Everything is off in trailer but generac can't handle that without a sag. I will return it to Costco.

with a hardwired surge protector and using a Honda, you will still need to make a grounding plug. And I can run the a/c with one Honda 2000 I, and water pump, tv, and overhead fan

Honda does not recommend running an AC with the 2000. Good way to ruin AC. Later RJD

It could be the Genny is not up to the task or you need a "Ground-Neutral Bond” jumper plug (edison plug).
