Questions for Powermax Boondocker users

I tried to add to previous discussions on the powermax units instead of starting a whole new thread but couldn't ... they were all closed because of being too old.

I, too, need to replace a bad WFCO unit and the boondocker is on my shortlist. Two questions, please, for current users of these units:

1. (from the product page on the bestconverter website) "Filtered DC Output (Works with or without a battery)"
Does this mean that if the coach is connected to shore power you could remove the battery entirely and still have working 12VDC circuits? If so it would be great because I could remove the battery in winter (to keep it from freezing -- and theft) but still have interior lights for maintenance or upgrading. Has anyone tried this and is it true?
2. Is this unit made in America?

Thanks for any responses.
