Rotella 15w40 for Onan 4K

Has anyone used Shell Rotella 15w40 oil for their Onan 4K? I couldn't find any other brand and I noticed this is for diesel. My buddy said he thinks it has the same specs and the Cummins Onan he has been using. Is he correct?

My buddy sent me a photo of the Onan oil and the specs are the same as Rotella T4.

That's what I use since there is no oil filter on mine.

Shell is good oil to use. You want a “diesel” rated sauce because of its ability to suspend particulate.

When I called, Onan specifically recommended Valvoline / Premium Blue engine oil SAE 15W-40. AutoZone had it, so that's what I used.

Not sure if it helps as it wasn't quite the question you asked.

Of course Onan recommended VPB. Onan is owned by Cummins who also is associated with Valvoline. They want you to buy their stuff.

I think I used the Shell oil in mine a few months ago. I also added a few ounces of "Marvels Mystery oil". This stuff is great in both oil and gas. You can get it at Walmart.

OP isn't going to go wrong with either. Can't get Valvoline here yet that I know of so I buy Rotella by the pail when they go on sale. That and with the rebates they offer oil changes are stay extremely cheap.

I’ve been using Rotella T in all my diesel trucks, GM, Ford, boats, mostly Cummins, and generators, Onan and Northern Lights, for 30 years. Among professionals it’s considersd the best motor oil available for heavy duty applications. I will definitely use it in my new motor home at the 50 hour change no matter what brand was in the factory original fill.
Just my experienced opinion.

Thanks for all the replies. Using SAE 15W40 Rotella or other brands is cheap enough and the key is to change it every 50 hours or once a year. Having solar panels on the roof cuts back my generator usage so I will have to exercise it once a month and change the oil once a year. I don't think I will be using 50 hours a year now.

The Onan manual says change oil every 150 hours or once a year after breakin. Where did the oil change every 50 hours come from? Am I missing something?
