shunt location?

Okay, I'm hoping my shunt was installed correctly for my new Trimetric 2025rv. The installer placed it underneath the TT. There was no space inside the battery box and this was as close to battery as installler could find. Is this a bad place to put it?......road grime?/water/.......

A shunt is an extremely-low-resistance resistor, across which a small voltage is developed. The amount of voltage is dependent on the amount of current passing through the shunt, and can be calculated using Ohm's Law. The developed voltage is read on a voltmeter that is calibrated and labeled to read "amps".

Given the extreme low impedance of this, I wouldn't think that it would be very affected by the elements, but you could always improve it's environment if you prefer.

Are the roads salted in winter where you go? Do you park on the beach? Salt water will have an effect.

If it is exposed to the weather it is a bad location (IMO). They are brass and corrode easily. This will alter the resistance at the terminals and eventually give you false readings.

Hope he put it on the "Ground" side right before the battery.

I would look for a plastic "Pelican" type box just big enough to put it in and seal up the wire holes with Silicone II. Mount the Pelican box to the frame.

You can get a pvc watertight junction box in the electrical aisle of any big box store and do the same. I used a 6"x6"x4" to mount mine in, on a bracket I built next to my battery box.
