Angry Smoke when plugged into 30amp for first time

Help please! I just got my new MiniLite 2104, brought it home and plugged into my newly installed 30amp electrical plug. Smoke started billowing out beside the fuse panel. Don't know if it was coming from fuse panel or the round vent next to it. Smelled like burning. I immediately unplugged and turned off battery. What did I do wrong???? What do I need to do now? Several hundred miles to dealer, not sure if anyone local can help. I live in Ft Lauderdale FL.

Who installed the "newly installed 30amp electrical plug"? Chances are high the outlet is wired wrong. We see it here every week.

Yep, need to know how it was wired. Been a few threads on here just this week alone about improperly wired outlets and frying convertors.

If person who wired it did not know it was specifically for an RV it could very well be wrong. See link below from Library to verify and or correct.
Forest River Forums - Downloads - How to wire an RV 30 amp outlet

If it was wired incorrectly, you should check your converter, microwave, and tv once you have it corrected.

Most likely receptacle wired to 240 volts instead of 120 volts. RV 30 amp receptacle are 120 volts AC.

Your electrician most likely wired it for 240 volts. If so they have burned up things in your RV since it's only supposed to be 120 volts.

We see this all too often here in the forums unfortunately.

Do not try to reconnect to this outlet.

You can go to the electrical panel in your house and look at the circuit breaker to this new outlet they installed. If it's twice as wide as most of your 15 amp circuit breakers in the panel , then it's a double pole breaker and unfortunately it is also 240 volts.

The converter always gets burned up in this scenario, and that's probably the smoke you had. The television and microwave if equipped, are hit and miss whether they get destroyed.

Contact a REAL Elect Company to Verify how the 30AMP box was/is wired, take Pic's and get the Quote in writing! Now call your Ins.Company, they have work to do for the money you paid them! Call both Ins.Companies if house & RV are different! Youroo!!

When you get all of this corrected, do yourself a favor and buy a Progressive Industries EMS (not a surge protector) either portable or hard wired in to your RV. It will check everything, including high or low voltage, reversed ground, and reversed neutral before transferring power to the RV.

While you are at it, if you need to replace the converter try to get a Progressive Dynamics instead of the WFCO that is most likely in your mini-lite. It's a 4 stage converter made in the US with a lifetime warranty unlike the Chinese WFCO

Linda, before we go chasing that rabbit, who is the one going to check this ... and do they know how to use a multimeter?

Tell us what you found when you did what wmtire asked before you worry about the converter.

If you're on the full site, click Search and enter Electrician. I'm guessing that will turn up many of them since everyone had a bone to pick with her/his Electrician!!

Hate to hear it, but we already kinda knew that was going to be the case.

You will need a converter and that is probably something left to a RV tech to install.

They can also check the television and microwave. If you hired an electrician to install this outlet, they should be responsible for the damage, as a NEMA TT-30R outlet (which should be the outlet he installed for your trailer) does specifically state on the front of it "120 volts" or close to it. (125V in the pic below)

You can go look at yours and see. Might want to take a pic of it for insurance purposes with your cellphone.

You will likely need to get a mobile tech rather than trying to return to your dealer.

As this will most likely not be a warranty repair, you should be able to have it done by any RV repair facility or a mobile tech. Check out local places then try to get some reviews.

Very true, as this "should" be an insurance claim on the electrician.

One more suggestion is that the electrician (in order to keep costs down) may offer to replace your converter themselves.

Personally, I would be wary of taking them up on this, since if they weren't familiar enough with a RV at the onset to know it wasn't supposed to be wired 240 volts...then how much do they "really" know about RV electrical?

Also you may have other damage, that an experienced RV tech would know to look for more than this electrician who obviously just had their first experience with one.

You have a new RV, and it should be restored with new parts (as good or better than it came with), with no shortcuts allowed due to the inexperience of others.

Just a suggestion, feel free to hate it.
