Craig, the 50 will still work even with the step down from 30 amp. My understanding, and as you know I'm no electrician, is that the purpose of the surge protector is to keep the electrical system safe from spikes and drops. I'm not aware of there being any issue of going from a 30 amp to a 50 amp protector creating any issues.
