Surge protector
I am all new to this stuff. Cant wait to go in our new rig next Sunday. A friend of mine with a new camper mentioned a surge protector. Never during my walk thru did they mention one. Do I need to get one?

I bought this one
Amazon.com: Progressive Industries EMSHW30C Surge Protector: Automotive
With the remote display you can monitor your load when plugged into 20 amp service. Individual boards can be replaced if it blows protecting your camper.

We went with a Progressive Industries unit also but we went with the portable unit EMS 50PTC, not a hard wired. Don't be tempted by the lesser expensive SSP units, the EMS units are triple the price but offer much more protection.
Congrats on the new rig.

I agree. Go with the EMS.
I use their portable 30amp (EMS-PT30C)

With all the electronics in the RV plus the additional items like a lap top, cell phone, eBook reader, TV’s, etc... A low voltage, bad ground or surge could cost hundreds or thousands to replace or repair all the appliances and wiring. I will not plug in without one. Additionally, I have a surge protector on each outlet in the RV. The reason is each time the AC or microwave turn on it sends an internal surge throughout the RV. I have done the same in my home. Because most items we use have micro processors or some type of electronics in the device, they’re susceptible to damage from electrical impulses.
I purchased a Progressive Industries product. The reason I bought a Progressive Industries product:
1. Made in U.S.A.
2. Lifetime Warranty
3. Surge Indicator
4. Open Ground
5. High/Low Voltage Protection
6. Time Delay for A/C Compressor
7. 3-Mode Surge Protection
8. Reverse Polarity Protection
9. Open Neutral Protection
10. AC Frequency Protection
11. Accidental 240V Protection

I just bought a Columbus 365RL and until I started reading here on the forum I hadn't thought of surge protection so thanks for reminding me. I've had a trailer in the past and never had a problem, but I believe you all are right there is too much at stake. Thanks for your advice.

Would you believe that the sales person that sold us our new trailer never heard of one? If these "people" (loose term) would learn about available product, think of the add on sales and commission they could make!

did a lot of internet shopping before deciding on the EMS-PT30C, didn't like the idea of the hard wired mostly because if you sell your trailer you have to start over and wire a new one in to the new trailer. Go to this site it tells what each one does to compare for yourself.
RV Surge Protector Comparison
Then shop around for the best price and least shipping charge

X2 (X2X2X2!!)
We have the 50 AMP unit for our 8289WS from Amazon:
Progressive Industries EMSPT50C Surge Protector : Amazon.com : Automotive
(NO I do not work for Amazon but YES I buy everything I can from them - I have found they are cheaper than Camping world - or any other place for that fact. PLUS, if you are Prime member they take returns no questions asked!)

Pppssstt....we had the Progressive Industries surge protector.... It is NOT a lifetime warranty! Ours got fried and we called and sent it back... they sent us another one... that does not work and will not replace it. They said they will not cover it if the power cord gets fried at the power source... beware!

Posts responding to the poster's question about time delay on his surge protector have been moved to his already existing thread here.
