I understand that I should get one, any recommendations?

My TT is 50 amp.

Thanks,

Surge Protector

I just finished installing one in my Sunseeker. It is a Progressive Industries EMC HW30C. It was around $300.00. It is a hardwired unit with remote display. I installed it after the transfer switch so it protects the coach power from both. It was fairly easy to install and directions were straight forward. Now never have to worry about it again. It also does more than just protect against surge. It has many other features such as high voltage or low voltage protection. Here are some pictures of the finished install. Hope this helps

keep in mind a surge protector ONLY protects from surges. A unit such as the Progressive Industries, which is highly rated, protects from everything. Surges, high voltage, low voltage, any issues with damaged or improperly wired receptacles, etc. I just got a new 5th wheel, and it will have a P I unit very soon.

X4 on Progressive Industries. The peace of mind is worth every penny, or should I say dollar.

Yep another vote for progressive industries.
I ordered our hardwired 50amp a few weeks ago. Had the surge only, progressive protector on our last 5er.

in the grand scheme of things .. why would a company charge 300 bucks for a surge protector ....i can buy a notebook pc for the same ... alot more thought/research/innovation in a surge protector????
yea ..i understand .. peace of mind .. insurance ... and all that .. but hey .. dont you think someone is making a fortune off these units??

Sure the company is making money, free enterprise at work. But considering what it will cost to replace all the on board electronics if something goes wrong I still think it's a wise investment for the protection it provides. It's like a fire extinguisher - better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it.

I belive the liability plays into the cost some, its Insurance basically, and they have a guarantee/ warranty. Besides, have u priced 50 amp components, wire, plugs, etc., etc. That stuff ain't cheap. Copper is at least $2 a pound-scrap price.
If there was a "cheap" unit out there, I personaly probably wouldn't buy it anyhow.
Reputation is worth a butt load of $$!!!

When you put a pencil to the cost of everything electronic in your rig that can be toasted, I think $300 is a cheap investment....

Had a friend lose $8K worth of electronics in his rig when the campground suffered a major spike.... He, like I, now has the PI $350 hardwired unit....

My first trip out with mine a few years ago, it protected my rig on three different occasions one night....

Ahhh, lets see. Notebooks are made in a huge factory with 250000 workers making 8 bucks a day, while PDI is a US company making a low volume of high quality units the have a lifetime warranty.

No one is making a fortune, but workers are getting a fair wage.

High volume vs low volume. Wages vs slavery. Hmmm.

a quality American made product with a lifetime warranty and a great reputation for support/warranty, vs a cheaply make product with a 90 day warranty and all "support" calls go out of the country to someone you can't understand. HMMM

Another vote for Progressive Industries protection, sure would ruin a trip if the converter and everything else got fried.

If I had the room I would buy a hard wire Progressive, but I bought a TRC just like Jammers above. Works great a little cheaper but not a lifetime warranty. If you buy it at CW they will exchange it even after the warranty. They did mine no questions asked. That's the only good thing I can say about them, they will take anything back just about. I should have listen to Turbo on that one, but just couldn't find a easy place to install it.

Nor would I.
I Like it because all I need do is plug it in, if I buy another trailer all I need do is a 30 second job of picking it out of one and placing it in the other.

Got a couple of pad locks and a chain on it hoping it does not grow legs.

And yes I use it even here at home.

I also use a cable lock around mine, But I have never heard of one being stolen yet. But it just to keep the honest people honest. If a rotten thief wants one I guess they will just cut the wire and take it like anything else.

If you have a 30 amp you can just loop the cord thru a longer master lock and back around the trailer power cord, at least that's what I did on my 30 amp trailer

(This pic is of the lock shown on a welder cord, since I dont have the 30amp trailer or surge protector anymore.....you can get the idea though)
