Surge protector?

Been reading the Internet and apparently it is a smart idea to get a surge protector for plugging into camp sites? Been searching and think this one will do as well as the $269 ones?

Any models by progressive industries are among the best and highly recommended. I've had mine for over a year. Worth every penny. Don't go cheap when investing in something that protects all your electronics.

rhino_160, yes it might work as well as the higher priced Progressive. But what are you going to do when the cheaper one does it's job? You are going to spend more money to buy another cheap unit. The Progressive units are guaranteed and they will replace it for free. Nothing else to buy. To quote the old Fram filter commercial - "You can pay me now or pay me later".

I don't know how true this statement is about replacements. I have had sure guard 34730 for 3 years, I had a problem with reading the display it clouded up. I called CW where I bought it they said that it was warranty for 1 year only. I called TRC directly and told them my problem they said to send it in. They also sent me the new model # 34780, free. I also own the older model that the OP is talking about. It is just a surge protector. The reason I bought the #34730 it reset automatically and has a 128 sec delay to protect your compressor. If I was just looking for a surge protector even with the low joules it has. that is better then nothing at all. Plus it will still give you everything except the time delay and auto restart. If you ever get a spike and the unit protects you your blow the surge protection anyway and need to replace it. How often due surge happens not many or at least I have never had one. Low voltage yes , high voltage yes but not a surge yet. Hope I never get one.

From everything I have read the one I was asking about has done its job on multiple campers according to reviews. Is there something this one will not do other than the auto restart and time delay? I don't need bells and whistles just reliability and protection. Should I NOT get this one?

For the price they are asking it is cheap insurance, I'd buy it.

Bite the bullet and just get the Progressive Industries, either the hard wired or plug in model. Difference between what your looking at and the Progressive, maybe 170-180 bucks is still cheaper than any appliance or tv that you may have to replace if "el chepo" blows.
It's a one time expensive, made in USA, and their service is second to none.

the one you are looking at will not protect you from what is probably the most likely thing you can experience. Low or high voltage. Progressive Industries EMS series monitors many things and disconnects power if something is wrong. That cheap unit will not save you from much. This is not a purchase to go cheap on.

I have been using the portable Surge Guard 50 amp for 2 years now. It cost about $575 in Canada but I feel better when we power up our unit.

Well what do you all think about this one. Figured I could wire it in under my sink (where my bulk wire is) and then still leave 15' of wiring to plug into the camp site. Any issues with this one or that method?

Same one I have installed in my Lexi.
It may seem to be expensive compare to the one you were originally looking at, but when you hook up to a bad electrical outlet and it saves your electronics, or a surge during a storm, you'll be thankful you spent the money.
Also, the internal components can be replaced via Progressive Industries, instead of having to replace the entire unit. Their service is absolutly the best and there is always tech advice (very friendly too) 24/7.

Progressive is good because of the life time Warranty. What is bad about both TRC and Progressive is that they do not drop out on low voltage until Progressive 104 volts, TRC 102 volts. Compressors have a plus or minus 10% factor built in before you start to damage the windings. So 10% minus is 108 volts plus is a 132 volts from TRC and progressives trips at 134 high voltage. It is still protection but I wouldn't trust it I keep a volt meter plugged in. If I drop into the red I'll shut off the A/C and any other app. I have running. Also progressive has less Joules then TRC for protection TRC has 2450 and Progressive has like 1850 Joules. If a surge happens both units will blow the wire. They will still work but without Surge Protection. Other then that both units are the same in operation. The TRC Joules are from there new unit 34830 not the unit it replaces 34730.

Which is where a Hughes Autoformer is helping (in conjunction with the TRC or progressive units). Sorry to change nature of thread, much has been stated about the autoformer on previous discussions/threads. But it's use adds another layer of protection.

I use the 30 amp Progressive Industries, it is how I learned my outside plugs were wired with an open ground, that answered why I was popping fuses in my trailer when plugged into 15 amp. I was lucky it was only fuses that went. Not sure which company is best (TRC, Progressive, Camco etc) but you need something, down to the Ford/GMC/Dodge which is best arguement but you need protection for your investment.
