Just go to Home Depot, Lowes, or Amazon and get an inexpensive residential wall thermostat. That one is ancient and the newer ones are digital (still $20 or less). You can still find the old analog ones, but I would upgrade to digital. Look for a "manual digital thermostat". Or you could use a programmable one if you wanted that feature.
You want to install it as a "2 wire heat only" thermostat. Basically you will just use the heat side of the thermostat and the "cool" setting will do nothing unless you decide to also wire in your AC unit (may or may not be easy). The actual wiring will be dependent on the thermostat you buy, but for most of them it will be the RH & W terminals on the thermostat that you will connect those 2 wires to (read the paperwork with the thermostat).

The lamp cord wire is what bothers me - no colors to match up to.

That's just a simple 'make or break' circuit on a analog Tstat. Easily replaceable with a new one from any good hardware store.

Yep, colors will not matter. You just need to connect one wire to the W and the other to the Rh on the new thermostat.
