USB Self Contained receptacles

I was at a show last week and I saw that it is now standard on a lot of Motorhomes to have USB outlets/receptacles. I am looking everywhere to find a self contained version to replace my old ones. Any insights to where I can get them?

If you're talking about standard 120 volt receptacles with USB charging outlets, a lot of places have them.

Here's one at Amazon that should work.

Amazon has a selection of them. Both 120V and USB charging up to 3.6 amp. Onboard "chip" optimizes charge rate for device plugged in.

FWIW, prices are all over the board for these devices but considering the value of the items you are charging I would not go cheap. Stick with quality and just pay the price.

There are many sources, of the combo 120 VAC receptacles + USB outlet, including retail stores. Note that these things are bulky and you'll need a larger/deeper outlet box and a wall that is thick enough for the box to fit. The USB ports come in different amp ratings. If your wall isn't thick enough, you could use a semi-recessed adapter like commonly used for GFI receptacles in an RV bathroom.

The USB outlets on these will only work when you are plugged into shore power. If you want or need to dry camp, you'll need a charging station like in the above photo.

I installed one of each in our TT and they get used a lot. Should be a standard feature in all RVs now.

I added two of these 12v USB outlets. Very easy to connect to nearby light and they work great. My best mod.

Got mine at Amazon.

ACE Hardware, Lowes and Home Depot carry different variations on USB receptacles. I have instead opted to buy a 6 outlet covering and use the plug in chargers. Much cheaper to do it that way and you do not have to worry about clearances for the USB outlet. Some phones can "sense" the different charger and will actually charge at a slower rate. That starts to heat up the phone battery.

If you just want to plug something into your existing 120VAC outlet that will give you a USB plug-in, like this:

Just google "USB wall tap." There are about a gazillion versions, from single 120VAC with 1 or 2 USB ports, up to 6 120VAC outlets and multiple USB ports.

They're a lot cheaper than replacing the outlet. Especially since your RV outlet is probably the standard RV outlet like this one:

All it's wiring is enclosed so it has no electrical box, and most USB replacements would require you to install an electrical box.

It's possible they're now making RV outlets as pictured above with USB ports, but I've not seen one.

I replaced both outlets at each end of the couch with ones with built in usb. Got them at Home Depot. Yes you have to add boxes but in my case there was plenty of room. I also changed out the outlets in the bathroom and lower bunk with ones that have built in night lights. Jay

I also used Powerwerx to install in my new trailer that didn't come with any. The USB's quit charging my phones. The light is still on and the fuse is good, they just don't supply any power. Not sure what is going on.

Put a voltmeter on it and see if you're getting voltage to the contacts. USB's are 5VDC I believe.

Here is an alternative approach to USB charging. Rather than the expense and effort to retrofit a wired outlet, you might consider a good USB Battery. It does require an occasional recharge, but it will do much more.

Here is one that will also jump-start a small car: Royal 400-Amp Portable Jump Starter and Mobile Device Charger - BJ's Wholesale Club

I know this is not what you were looking for, but I thought it might be helpful. Mine is a game changer, as it is SO much easier than jumper cables. It does work, and I have even started a car twice without recharge. Mine is in my TV at all times, and I will soon buy another for the cars.

Yep Home Depot, Ace and Lowes all have replacement duplex outlets with USB ports built in. Very easy to wire in. I have them in TT and all over the house.

Please make sure what ever you get is UL approved. There are many that are not.

Personally I got some to add but found that the 12v ones are better so you have access while no 120v power. They are a bit cheaper as well and don't require a retrofit box to be added.
