What Has Your PI EMS Protected You From?

A lot of FRF members have a Progressive Industries EMS. I installed a hard wired EMS in my previous Roo and put one in my current TT, too. I've mostly seen low voltage but once saw high voltage and a neighbor had a "hot skin" condition.

What has your PI EMS protected you from?

It protected me from an open ground ( E-2) just this weekend. I have used it 4 times camping since I have had it and this weekend was the first time it threw a code. Park Ranger came around with his multi meter and said he couldn't see anything wrong with it. I asked him to send maintenance to check it too. They came and the breaker was so hot they couldn't hardly touch it. They replaced the 30 amp breaker and had a great weekend camping.

HIGH voltage - as much as 138v! Campground called electricians who didn't know DW was watching out the trailer window. They came, looked, left but tested nothing. I told camp management they were wasting their money since the electricians did nothing. They returned within an hour!
Our EMS shut off our power probably 30 times in 16 hours before we were sent home because of rising lake water which threatened to block the only road out AND was rising INTO A BIG POWER CENTER in the park!

Loose breaker connection once, and reverse polarity twice. The last time it took me an hour to convince park personnel to correct the problem.

We have experienced 3 incidents. Thank goodness for our EMS Surge Protector.

The 1st time showed Reverse Polarity. 2nd time was a total Blackout in the CG from a passing Tornado, and the 3rd we encountered a Power Surge during the night. Very glad we purchased it. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. JMO!

We have just returned from a 4 1/2 week road trip across Canada and then back through the US. Our hardwired PI EMS discovered an open ground at one site which, when I reported it to the owner, he asked me what that meant. Not being electrically experienced, I had to Google it and then told him. The fault was repaired within a day to two.

At another CG we experienced repeated low voltage problems and then finally, on our way home it twice saved us at separate CG's when a lightening storm hit the CG power and kicked that out.

I don't know for sure what this saved us from on all of these occasions but I do know that all the electrical appliances still work in the RV and for that I am happy to have invested the money making this purchase.

This spring we experienced periodic power losses over a 2 day period as our Progressive 50 amp EMS occasionally cut power to our Cardinal 3850. We finally lost all power on the second day. I assumed our Progressive EMS went bad: WRONG!!! The technician at Progressive walked me through the troubleshooting and we were able to confirm that the Furrion F50-ATS (automatic transfer switch) was the problem. I had clean power coming into the Furrion ATS and bad power leaving the Furrion ATS. The Progressive EMS did its job: it saved our coach and the electrical system!

To quickly restore power, I bypassed the Furrion ATS by splicing the in-coming and out-going 6 gauge cables. The temporary splice restored power to the Progressive EMS and our Cardinal. A few thoughts in closing:
1. The in-line Progressive EMS should be installed after the ATS to protect against ATS failure;
2. A portable EMS would not have protected us against the ATS failure.

Low voltage on line 1 was the error, but voltage was dropping to 103 on line 1 and 105 on line 2. Ranger was mad because the camp had just replaced the power lines. They called the electrician and he admitted that all 30 amp outlets were wired to line 1. Turns out that most of the campers near us were using 30 amps which was sucking down L1 voltage on a 93 degree, 85% humidity sunny day! Electrician stated they would re-wire that line later

2 weeks into ownership 11 trailers fried when an aluminum ground cable rotted off a main power line in a KOA campground blowing microwaves up, causing inverters to pop.

2 of the 11 got compensation from the campground 4 months later.
it ended our 1st camping season.

Since then we've hardwired a PI EMS 30 amp system into 4 trailers. we did ours with 30amp twist locks so they could be removed prior to sale or trade in.
Current Toy hauler on the 16 Ecoboost was 2 days in our possession and had the PI EMS30 wired in.

a lot of people who said they would never need one looked at the pics of the damage to my 2012 Salem and decided they would not take the chance.

nothing promotes the sale of an item for safety than seeing someone with damaged products.

I think the "hot skin" condition was most likely reversed polarity, which I encountered in a campground outside of Atlanta a couple of years ago. When we first started RVing several years ago, I made the mistake of thinking all we needed protection from was a power surge. Luckily, I wised up before anything like reversed polarity was encountered, invested the money and saved myself many times over the cost of the PI EMS.

Why weren't all of them compensated?

I have had my pt-50C about 2 years now and it has saves the TT one bright sunny Sunday morning around 0800 at Fountainebleau State Park. The unit tripped off on a low voltage error and switched back on a couple of minutes later. I examined the pedestal, but everything appeared to be OK.The pedestal was about 50 ft from the padmounted transformer. The only thing I can come up with is a falling tree branch or a suicidal squirrel on the overhead utility feeder.

My EMS actually would shut off at 5 everymorning and then cycle back on. Called PI and they told me that the error code was high cycles. Nearby neon lights could cause the misread. Took a look around and found a battery of lawn sprinkler soilnoid field next to my unit. Figured the magnetic field of a few of them coming on could cause the cycle spike.

If you haven't seen any error codes, it hasn't seen anything to report. Once you have an error code, you have to disconnect power at the post to clear the error code. When it restores power the code will have a "P" in front of it, like "PE-4" for a previous low voltage situation (on Line 1 if you have a 50A EMS).

Was at music festival campground this weekend with 139V condition! We are firm believers in PI EMS!!!!
