Axle Mounts
First let me send a special thanks to OldCoot for making me aware of a design flaw in the mounts of our axels. I was digging through some old threads yesterday and found the flaw that OC has mentioned many times. The picture below should explain everything, that space should not be there, the mounts are moving. I will loosen the bolts holding the mounts, use my 6 ton bottle jack to move the mounts back into place and torque the bolts back to specs. Drill 1/2" holes through the 2"X 6" frame above the bracket and bolt it into place with gr 8 1/2" X 1 1/4" bolts, washers, lock nuts and torque them down as per O.C. 4 times on each axel. The front axels have the gaps towards the front of the RV, the rear axels have the gaps towards the back. I was wondering why I was having to close up my X chocks little by little, now I know. These are Dexter axels with about 4,000 miles on them.

The design flaw is not the fault of Dexter. The flaw lies with either Forest River or Lippert, not sure witch company mounted the axel to the frame but in the end FR should fix this. This is not a battle for me to wage with FR, I can take care of this myself. I'll be out the cost of the hardware, I have the tools to take care of this. Not worth the time the unit would be out of service for me to take it to FR and maybe not get fixed at all.

No thanks needed, it was pointed out to me in 08 when we bought our 08Flagstaff831RLSS by another forum, don't remember which one. Fellow had his axle twist completely out from under his unit while turning sharply into a gas station. I think this design flaw falls directly on Lippert and FR as they Lippert need to add the extra holes in the frame and provide the bolts pre-welded to a plate to insert in the tubing. FR for not demanding it or doing it themselves. NO excuse for this!

Lippert installs the axles on the frame.
Forest river should be notified by everyone and anyone with this issue or it will never get resolved.

Brought it up on the factory tour last year and the Flagstaff guide just sloughed it off even though I showed him one on the lot.

Anyone with a 5er that has the torsion axels should crawl under there and have a look at the mounts. If they can't do it someone they trust should, showing them the pictures that are on line. This is one heck of a safety hazard. Not sure if the TT's have this same setup but a look at those wouldn't hurt.

Unless things change I'll be back out at our storage area on Thursday and will get more pictures. The one shown is curb side front, I'll get pictures of the other three mounts and post them. I am also going to check the torque on the existing mount bolts and post those also.

I had mine fixed at the rally, they looked just like the provided pics. Leo could check the repair tags and hopefully the tech's made a comment on my repair request.

After thinking about it I am trying to figure out why the bracket has the slot instead of a hole. I was also thinking about welding the bracket to the 2"x6". That might not be good for the temper in the metal so I'll drill and bolt it like O.C. did and let it go at that.
