Can I replace just one tire?

We arrived at St George Island State Park yesterday afternoon. It is about a 3.5 hour drive from home. When I came out of the Ranger Station I thought one the of tires on my 5ver looked flat, upon inspection it was the sidewall separating. The tire was still fully inflated (I have a TPMS) and I decided to wait until I got the 5ver on the campsite to mess with it. Got the 5ver parked and decided to wait until today to mess with putting the spare on it as it was rainy. This is the second time this has happened ironically it was Thanksgiving week last year except then it separated and blew on I 75. I have the Towmax tires from the factory on it and want to change to another brand. If I can avoid buying 4 new tires right now it would be nice. If I buy just one tire now and replace the others over the next few months am I asking for trouble? I mean will there be any issues with towing as long as I get the same size tire. Also looking for recommendations on what tire I should go with. BTW the 5ver isn't even 2 years old yet.

Thanks
Rick

The age of the trailer is not the date you need to go with.

The blowout you had before, was it on the same axle?

If you feel safe with buying just one then do so, myself I would buy two.

Any idea what tire dealer you will buy from and what ST brand they carry?

You can get the same tire and put it on NO harm there, then save up and get the other 3...

I really don't remember which axle but it was on the same side I'm an old fart and don't remember details like I used to. I am so far from anything at the moment and figure that I will wait until I get home, spare is like new (not leaving here until next Sunday) so I can get pretty much any St brand as our next trip is not planned until Christmas.

After having two of these Power King Tow max separate in less than 5000 miles I want to go to another brand. Are the Goodyear Marathon tires good?

We had one on our Crusader get a bulge on the sidewall, milked it home with no problems and replaced all 4 with a higher load rating with Maxxis. We didn't put the spare on because the build date put it at 6 years old IIRC, I would suggest you do the same, we feel much more comfortable knowing we have a higher load rating tire on it, and these tires are wearing much better than the OE tire. FYI, FR was great and reimbursed us for the tires. No one knows how an old tire made it onto our new 5er.

On my old Puma, I suffered a blowout on my drivers side axle driving the freeway. It took me a minute to make my way over to the shoulder and stop. I changed the tire out for my spare and thought all was good. The next weekend the OTHER tire on the same side blew! All I can figure is that the remaining tire from my first blowout incurred so much weight and heat that it weakened it so it blew the next time out.

Moral is to replace them in sets. A side note: my replacement Carlisle LRD tires are excellent after 2 years, 95 nights camping, and 1000's of miles.

Thanks for all the replies. After reading a bunch of reviews on different tires I have come to this conclusion that all trailer tires have issues even the Maxxis and Goodyear Marathons. For every one that has a problem there are others that swear by them. I found a local dealer that has Hercules tires in stock and said that the manufacture date is 6 months ago. We are going to another campground Wednesday and I will stop and have them all replaced then. He quoted me a price of $540 out the door.

My vote is replace all 4. When one goes others may be close behind. These tires run close to their weight ratings. Also look at production date. Much over 5 years change them.

I have the same trailer, even same year, and had the same tires. I had a blowout on one tire while in NM last summer. We had over 7,000 miles on the tire before it happened. I replaced with a no-name tire. That was the only one the dealer in Carlsbad had in that size.

However, upon returning home some 3,000 miles later, I noticed the remaining 3 original tires all had bumps or bulges coming out the sides. I switched all 4 to Marathons and made the newer no-name my spare. I agree that all tires have folks that swear by them and seems to be just as many that swear at them!

We made it to Alaska and back this summer, over 11,000 miles, with no trouble so I'm satisfied. I do keep an extra close eye out now for bulges. I suspect the tire that blew out may have had a bulge that I just wasn't watching for. I was totally focused on the pressure and not really too observant/concerned of the physical condition -- lesson learned.

Why do trailer tires have so many more problems than motor home or truck tires? Is it the trailer axles as opposed to the truck axles? or is it the way the tires are constructed? After having had a class A and a class C for over 20 years and only having 2 flats I have had 4 flats with my 5er in one year and 2 were with load range E not the Cs that came on it.

The tires that come with trailers are usually right at the max for trailer. First thing I did is replaced all 4 with Goodyear load rate D. Never had any issues with these like I did the first trailer that had the as we call China bombs. Later RJD

Check to see just where the tires are manufactured before you buy them. If they are made in China, run and run real fast!

A lot of tires for RV's/trailers are now made in China (even the "brand name" ones) and they are all junk. Don't assume that because it has a known name they are good tires.

Pay a bit more for ones made in the US. You won't regret it!

Hey Rickv,
Sorry to hear about another tire problem.....We have over 5500 on our Hercules and Haven't had any problems. We got them from tire mart in lake city, not sure what the total was. The price you have does sound good. Let us know how things work out????

Major, the consensus around here seems to be that they're all made offshore these days - even the most popular brands: Goodyear and Maxxis. If you're aware of a brand that's still made in the US or Canada please let us know.
