Confused over tire choice

Need to replace ST235/85R16 G rated tire.
08 Cardinal w/7000lb axels
I do not know true trailer weight, I do however travel very light.
Very little space between the two tires, less than 2in.

I know GoodYear makes the only American Made tire that will match. I want to keep the 16in rims but can I go with a different size tire ? or a different rated tire (not a g ) ? I look at all the different size LT tires for a 16 in rim and get really confused. How much difference will there be if I go down from the G rating? Would I be loosing a safty factor by doing that?
Thanks for the help

Since you have never weighed your unit you have no idea what the weight on the axles are. It could be 5000lbs per axle or 7000lbs per axle. Personally I would never install a tire that is rated under the axle ratings.

I know you said you do not want to change wheels, but IMHO changing to 17.5 inch tire and wheel package would be worth every penny if you plan to keep the fiver for a long time. Probably would be the last tires you buy for it. With 7K axles you need the GY G what ever they are and run them at 110 PSI. Basically it is the only 16 inch game in town.
