Glad I checked??

So...ordered the Crusader back in October and picked it up in January. Since then DW and I have about 3,000 miles on it.

We leave for a trip out West on Thursday for 2 weeks. Today while doing general maintenance I decided to inspect the EZ lube axles.

Too my surprise there was little to no grease. It took 2 tubes just on the drivers side (1 per tire) to get it to come out so it was visible......I ended up running out and need to get more tomorrow to finish the other side. Also the drivers side still felt(Not a lot of play) and spun well...

During trips I gun the tires and drums and all were within a couple degrees of each other so I figured all was good. However it did seem as it heated up it pulled a little harder, but that could be just my mind...

So I am not really sure how to feel about this......Happy I checked?? Disappointed at FR or the dealer??

Reading as much as I have on this site, I guess it does not really surprise me...But now I finish writing this...I guess I am disappointed in myself for knowing this and not checking sooner...

Hello, Did you jack up and spin the wheels while pumping grease?

Was this the first time you greased the axles? Adding lots of grease on the first time is pretty common as when the axles are assembled the bearings are greased before assembly NOT using the EZ lube zerk. The first EZ lube grease has to fill the entire hub assembly before the old grease get pushed out the front.

That said, 2 tubes on one side sounds excessive. I think you should pull them and inspect the rear seal and brakes.

You are correct this was the first time. I say 2 tubes but I already had one in the gun so I am not sure how much was left. I can say it was 1 full tube between the 2 wheels plus what was left in the first tube.

Yeah I was thinking about checking the seal. Really one of the reasons I posted. I wanted to see if this was normal for the first time with EZ lubes or if I need to dig in further.

Thanks for the responses.

Good thing you checked instead of finding out on your trip.

Absolutely!

No fun to have to have major repairs done when on the road trying to enjoy yourself.

Finished the passenger side today. This time kept track. Only took 1 full tube for both bearings. My first tube yesterday must have been lower than I thoughts. I did pull the tire of the side that seemed to take a lot of grease and all seals are well. Must have just been low from the get go.

Thanks for responses everyone!! Maybe I'll see you out on the road...

My second tube of grease went into the EZ Lub fitting just fine. It also migrated from the bearing area to the brake shoes, drums, magnet, etc, so guess what? NEVER again will I use the EZ Lub fittings. For me it's back to disassemble, clean everything, hand pack, reassemble, and down the road I go until 12 months later when i'll do it all over again!

Doing a full change of grease twice on my axles I have only used 2 tubes total.

That may be a seal problem/ seal surface or the hole was drilled out of spec.
Also the seal could have been installed incorrectly. Check after you redo for seal leak after a few miles. I use the drilled axle on boat trailers in saltwater, greatest thing since slice bread. But the seal is the critical area. If I drive the seal too deep on one hub it will leak because the seal lip is on the edge of the hole. "Out of Spec". Look for why it leaks when you redo. Good luck!

@BnB
I get that and makes sense. When I handed packed my old TT surely used less. I feel that the EZ Lube uses more because it has much more wasted space. Of course the manual says little to nothing. I did check the one seal of the wheel that seemed to take more and all is good. Hated taking everything apart but peace of mind...

Thanks!

The only thing you could do is take it all apart and clean. Just be looking to be sure the grease does not leak after redo. If the seal area leaks it may allow grease to get out. They use a double lip seal on the boat trailer stuff and probably on the rv stuff. Never been into mine. From my experience with saltwater I just check temperature and go. I did find out years ago about the double seal the hard way. Not all seals are the same, though they may fit.
Sometime there may be a burr on the drilled hole but do not chamfer it.
