grease drip
I would appreciate some experienced advice on a problem I have with my new RockWood 8315BSS TT. After my first long distance trip 7000 km last summer in some very hot weather, I found this grease leak coming from the hub. Dealer tells me that it was just over packed with grease and to keep an eye on it. After cleaning it up and hitting the road again (300km) it re-occurred. Is this kind of issue seen often or am I having my chain pulled.

Could be over packed. Also looks like maybe the buddy bearing is not sealing.

X2 on the overpacking of grease, that is if you had greased prior to departure on your trip. I had a similar problem after repacking the wheel bearing on my flagstaff 831 and I had to replace the bearing covers. You can find them at any auto parts store. Have the wheel bearings ever been repacked? I would replace the cap. JMHO

Thanks for the insight. I had never repacked my bearings as this was my first trip and didn't think it would be necessary. All total I have about 9000 KM on the rig this would be about 5600 miles.
1. pardon the dumb question....what is a "buddy bearing"?
2. how often should you repack with grease?
3. Should the axel assembly be pulled and inspected on a regualr basis.
Thanks

Too much grease and the cap need to be tapped in to seat properly.
I have the same issue and it was too much grease but also I put duct tape around the cap to kind of seal the cap where it is pressed into the axle. I did have one that keep falling out and needs to be replaced.
Since that time of my leaks I only give it 2 or 3 pumps of grease every 500 plus mile trip. When you remove the rubber cap it SHOULD NOT be filled to the brim with grease.

Bubby Bearing is just the cap. It has a spring in it. so when you pump grease into bearings it holds a small amount to pressure on the grease. This is designed to stop water coming in from the back seals. Only thing bad is if you do not have a good seal on the cap or seal grease leakes out. Looks like that is what is causing your problem.

there you go
done that before
my boat has rubber caps that slip over the buddy's
keeps extra grease off the wheels
can be found at most all boat trailer supply stores
I think anyway ??
they help to just keep a little more
of the salt water out
or
in this case
to keep the grease inside a compartment

And I thought I was the only one that used duct tape that way.

I have been a mechanic all my life and if you have a leak out of a seal than the contamination can get in the hub. Most parts are warrantyed for 12 mo. I think that you should contact your dealer becouse if you wait till spring the 12 mo may pass. Good luck.

Ours did the same thing. If you take one off you will see that the lip is bent a little, just enough to let some grease out. I think the press that they use bends them a little. A new cap will fix it. Tap it on with a rubber hammer and a block of wood.

I just sent an email off to my warrantee contact at Forest River and asked about my 2 caps. I told home if they sent them to me I will replace them because I don't have a local dealer for Forest River that is within 100 miles.

My kids would love this!
I can also attest to using duck tape for anything. We use to use it to tape up severe blisters in long races.

Call me old fashioned/old school but although I have EZ Lube axles, I repack the bearings with new seals each year on our Sierra 325RGD. Last season i found the spring shackles almost worn through so I upgraded to a Dexter kit with wet bolts and a new "Y" equalizer. I have the tools and time so do not have to pay the high dealer prices. Worth it to me for an extra margin of confidence. Got rid of the cheap Chinese junk tires and upgraded to Michelin XRV. I'm not going to be on the side of the road if I can help it.

I just checked the Michelin XRV and couldn't find one in my size
225/75/R15
The repacking each year is good if you drive 8-10 thousand miles but for most of us that only happens once or twice after retirement. Glad you found your worn shackles before they broke. No moreleaf spings for me.

I just sent AL KO a message on their website with my information about the caps falling off. We will see if they respond positively. Sounds like they just got a bad batch of end caps that were not to specs. I did save the web link for the caps just in case I need them.
