grease fittings on wheel hubs

i pulled the rubber caps off the center wheel hub and saw the grease fittings .. are these supposed to be similar to bearing buddies that i am used to ?? (had them on boat trailers ) i tried to grease them with 2 different types of hand grease guns ..not much luck..either the grease didnt go into the hub (stayed out side) and the center area didnt move out toward the outer edge of the hub..how far should they move towards the outer edge ?? if at all ??

They do not move like BB. It will take lots of lube to fill the center cavity. Then put the rubber disk back on. Youroo!!

You might want to check the grease fittings themselves. All 4 on my trailer were defective. Grease would not go through them. To check remove the fitting, then put on the grease gun. Grease should squirt out of the fitting. Mine were plugged. New ones worked fine.

It does take quite a bit of grease to fill the hub the first time you grease them.

I had one rolling around inside the dust cap, one that was loose and one that was bad (would not take grease) right from the factory.

Or do the right thing and do not use them at all and pack the bearings the right way. Which if you go to page 20 of the Al-Ko 2 to 7k manual it clearly states after the instructions for using the ultra lube feature itself.


Hubs and components should also be disassembled
yearly and inspected for worn or otherwise damaged parts.


If you clean and pack your bearings properly after doing the service above there is no need to be pumping the hub cavity full of grease which all it does in there is slow heat dissipation. The bearing design in the axles is exactly the same as has been used in cars for years and years and you never saw people pumping the hubs full of grease and they would go for years and far more miles than get put on an RV in a year without any maint.

And of course Alko goes to all the expense of machining/drilling/tapping the holes and putting a grease fitting in the spindles just to have something to do and show off their machining skills.

x2 on the bad fitting, replaced all 4 of mine, I also jack wheel off ground and rotate while greasing.

This is what I use ..... after years of hand packing bearings I got this and never turned back !
$10.00 and takes 30 seconds to do 2 bearings.

Used one of those for years, but on the trailer with grease fittings in the end of the spindles, I don't bother to take them apart. Getting real lazy in my old age.
