How to Hub Lube

How do I know what kind of hubs I have and the procedure to lube them. I have a 2012 Surveyor SV264 (10 Aniv Ed). It has TorFlex axles and the fancy wheels with the plastic chrome looking caps.

Thanks - Rick

Do the "plastic chrome looking caps" have a part in the middle that can removed (without taking the wheels off)? If so, pop this off and see what it says on the piece you see inside that removable cover.

(The official way is to get the axle number off the axle by looking at the tag on it and then calling the manufacturer of the axle to ask them what it has.)

If the center of your hub has a plastic cap (like BarryD said) or a rubber cap that can be removed, chances are you have a grease zerk under the cap. If you do, life just got easier.

Jack up the wheel you want to grease til it's off the ground. Attach your grease gun to the zerk. Give the wheel a spin and while its spinning give it one full pump on the grease gun. I do this at the beginning of the season.

I use a good synthetic grease that is the same as what's rated for a boat trailer.

Actually there are different types of hubs that have a fitting and some have specific grease requirements.

X2 - did you not get a manual ? probably not (I didn't), but my FR tech rep sent me instructions.

Dexter EZ Lube. Has a rubber cap under the plastic cap. I think I read somewhere you can't lift by the axle. Do I have to lift by the frame?

Thanks - Rick

I looked for a manual before I posted. FR is a little light on manuals and instructions.

Cool! That's what I was hoping you would say.

Here's a link to the manual in our Library area: http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...?do=file&id=15

See page 56 for the procedure. Page 50-52 tells you what grease to use. Note that it takes a LOT of grease. Expect to use up to a half-tube per wheel. Be sure to pump slowly so you don't push the seals out.

Edit: I fixed the link. Thanks all!

I always jack at the point just inside the wheel where the axle is attached to the frame.
