Infrared Temperature Checking Questions

I've had several wheel bearing burnouts the last few years, even after repacking bearings within 12 months. I recently bought an infrared temperature gun so I could check and determine when the bearings are generating heat and likely to be going south. My wheels have covers over the hubs. Can I just check the temps of these covers? And how high of a temp should be a concern, or how much of a difference between temps on the same side of the trailer give you folks reason to jack it up and investigate?

My trailer is a 2010 Rockwood Signature Ultralite.

Bearings shouldn't see temps higer then 250F for good running life. I would shoot the temp of bearing as close as possible to the bearing. If the covers are on, and one hub/ cover is significantly hotter then the others this could indicate a problem.

If you have the plastic lug nut covers, I wouldn't use that. I'd shoot the wheel close to the center or if you have spoked wheels, shoot between the spokes.
