Is this the answer to blowouts
Amazing new tires...
Michelin Tires... Absolutely SCARY looking...
Look for 'em in August.
These tires are made in South Carolina , USA
SEE THROUGH TIRES
Radical new tire design by Michelin.
The next generation of tires.
They had a pair at the Philadelphia car show.

Those look awesome. It is about time they got away from the old design of adding air to a tire. When was that invented? The 1800's? This looks so much better and will avoid flats and blowouts. This should save lots of lives.
Vin.

Hey, those are "Tweels"! They've been toying with them since ~2004-05. I've seen photos and read studied some performance test data available in the industry, but never saw them in-person. Where were they at the show? Didn't see them.

Yep, that the tweel. They have been in the pipeline for a while. We've had a few conversations thru the years about them here in the forums.
They are still having problems with vibration at high speeds, along with large rocks and such getting stuck in the "spokes"...which has really hampered the passenger vehicle market. They have been putting them on equipment that doesn't go fast though with pretty good success.
Here is a good article on them for those interested. Who knows, they may get it all figured out. Wouldn't it be nice to not have a need for tire pressure monitoring systems?

There's a few things they got right at or very near the beginning of the auto industry, air filled tires and pistons in a cylinder making a crankshaft turn. I don't see either going away any time soon.

Why does this remind me of a wagon wheel.

Biggest thing I see wrong with them is tire biting dogs will be in for big surprise. Very interesting design.

I like the design but a little mud in the wheel wall area may cause an out of balance hop. Using in urban areas no mud. Campers and RVs maybe another issue

I remember seeing those at the Detroit auto show something like 10 years ago. Glad to see they've progressed from concept to prototype.
I still think it'll be a while before they become mainstream. Looks like there's just too many possible failure points:
- bonding between tread and spoke
- things in the spokes
- possible pinching of fingers/small animals
- snow and ice buildup
Etc....
Now if they could incorporate some kind of sidewall, that might alleviate a lot of those....

I'm thinking something like panty hose that is flexible but much stronger. You wouldn't want a run in your new tweels.

Conestoga wagon, Studebaker? As far as we've come, we're back to the 'wheel'?

Pistons in a cylinder turning a crankshaft. - right on. And if you think about it,as far as I can tell, isn't that the purpose of any engine or motor? Any engine/motor main purpose is to turn a shaft - electric motor, gas or Diesel engine, jet turbine engine etc.

What's the purpose of the "Deformable Wheel"? If you want this tire to continue to run or "limp" for X amount of miles after blowout, wouldn't you want the wheel to be Undeformable?

If you 'deform' it , it goes back to conformity all by its self, like memory foam, I
ve seen this for years but each time I see it they have improved it, it is / has been developed and used by the military in different countries.

Ok - I didn't see that in the pictures. Your pic here looks like that would make one monster of a snow tire.

I made a glass topped coffee table out of one of these and 4 horse hanes we have in our family room. Opps, it is now under the back porch as of a few minutes ago. TOWTA re-arranged everything. (Again)

And if you use the new version you do not have to chock the wheels anymore when setting up.
