New tire, 7 years old

I had one tire on my truck that was unlucky, I had a slow leak on that tire. What they found was a nail almost on the side. At first the man said the tire could not be repaired, then his boss was showing me the tire and said the tire could be repaired. I asked what the spare tire looked like(brand new tire, 7 years old). He found out the tire couldnít be patched as there was another patch to close. Anyway they plugged that tire and made a spare out of it. So now I have a brand new tire on the truck thatís seven years old. The tire looks good to me but Iím not a tire person. Anyway tomorrow Iím letting another tire shop look at the tire, this person sells nothing but tires and at a good price. If Mike says the tire is okay Iíll order three more Goodyearís, if not Iíll order four Michelin LTX M/S2 and use best of the Goodyearís for a spare. Unfortunately if I do that Iíll throw a new tire away, new just seven years old

Spock, I have this discussion with customers several times a week. What I have to explain is that you have an "unused" spare tire, but it is hardly new. As you stated it's 7 years old. I get some that are 20 years old or better.

Tire rubber is like a battery....it's dying from the day it's made.

What I do not like about putting older spares into service, is that they have not been "blooming" and a lot of times the tread will peel off (causing damage).

Here are some previous links to posts about "blooming".

best approach for changing tires on same wheels?

a 7 year old tire makes for a good spare only.

Agreed. They may get you off the highway but a 7 year old tire shouldn't be considered a long term run replacement.

DW said if it was her she would buy five tires and throw the spare and the other old four tires away. Then buy three tires the next time and use the spare then.

Spock, This is what Discount tires states as to the life expectancy of a tire.

https://www.discounttire.com/learn/tire-aging

I had a friend you wanted is tires rotated and re-balanced by Discount Tires and the store refused is request. Why? The tires were over 10 years old on his truck. The truck is never driven in the winter months do to salt on the roads. So, there is very little mileage on his tires or the truck, the truck is driven about 3000 to 4000 miles a year.

Take this for what it is worth!

Thanks Cavie ! blew coffee everywhere. At first glance I thought you posted..."A 7 year old makes for a good spare only." Immediately thought of my Grandkids.

So this spare tire has never been in the sunlight so the tire should be okay. Tires usually last me about 2 and a half years as I not only use my truck for camping but also a daily driver. Another question, are all E rated tires ten ply? The Goodyearís that I have on the truck now has always hydroplaned when going through water. I had the Goodyear Kevlar tires on truck once and they seemed to do better in wet conditions. I really only need a tread for highway use, we never go off-road. I have been looking at Michelin LTX M/S2. I was planning on buying a new set soon anyway.
