Over inflated tv tires

I have an 06 f250 fx 4x4. I got new tires put on almost a year ago and just realized they are not the same as was originally on it. The tire store told me they were the same, I took their word for it. The new tires have been inflated to 75 lbs since buying them last september and I just read the sidewall, says 44 max. Also these are P265/70r17, where my old original tires were LT 265/70r17 and had 80 lbs max on the sidewall. The truck door sticker says 75 lbs, but that's for LT tires. These sort of new tires have a max load of 2500 lbs. each. GVWR of the truck is 9200, so I'm ok there. Occasionally I've put 2000 lbs of gravel in the bed but not since I got these tires, would that be pushing it? Rear GAWR is 6000, the curb weight of this truck according to NADA is 6000 something. I don't know actual curb weight of rear axle. Total max load of truck is 3000.

Have I damaged these tires? I've put about 5000 miles on them at the 75 lb pressure. And would I have a problem if I now change the pressure to the 44max? I kind of feel duped by the tire store, and it took 3 visits to get the tires and wheels balanced right. Upon looking at the receipt, I got what I paid for.

Not sure what you are towing with the "P" rated tires on the 3/4 ton truck but I am pretty sure since you got what you paid for... You'll be wanting to start saving for the LT's.

The tire dealership should be ashamed of themselves putting passenger tires on a F250 thinking that would be okay...probably too late to do anything about it though.

To top it off, the tire store is affiliated with the ford dealership, one of those Quick Lane stores. I have my truck going in to the dealership for tranny fluid change this week, and am gonna try talking to the service mgr about the tires.
Anyone know if I'll have problems changing the pressure to the 44 psi?

I got what I paid for, just not what I asked for, I guess I shoulda checked them better when I bought them. They are supposed to be an extension of the dealership, and I trust the dealer to do work on my vehicles. The company I work for is their preferred body shop, and we buy a lot of parts from them.

I believe I would never go back there again and make sure none of my friends did either.

Maybe you can just buy 2 lt tires for the rear and run the p tires on the front.

You can not mix tire sizes or types. It is against DOT regulations in Ontario where I live. Professional tire dealers wont even install only 2 snow tires any longer due to safety concerns as well.

running at an over-inflated pressure will have had an effect - potentially damaging the belts / carcass of the tire.
Note that the load rating for the P265/70r17 is a lot less than your RAWR by approx 1200lbs per http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=70

this is the equivalent of taking the tire's load capacity branded on its sidewall and multiplying it by 91%. For example, a Euro- or P-metric tire designated to carry 2,000 pounds on a car is restricted to carrying 1,820 pounds when used on a van, pickup truck or SUV

Tire diameter variations can be caused by accidentally using different sized tires, tires with different tread designs, tires made by different manufacturers, different inflation pressures or even tires worn to different tread depths

IMHO I would be letting the dealership & anyone who asks about the lack of knowledge this tire shop has and certainly would not send any of my money or that of friends or associates their way

About the only good thing you have going for you in this abomination of a story is the gas motor. A PSD would have added more weight. The manager of the place who put those tires on should get kicked in his balls.

Thanks for that info sgt. Yes I plan to let the service mgr have an ear full, and if that dont get me anywhere, also the sales mgr since the company I work for has bought 7 trucks from them in the past four years. I think they should reimburse me the cost of these tires, I don't mind paying more for the LTs that are supposed to be on my truck. I would think these tires can be dangerous being over inflated by that much for almost a year.

You should not have a problem going back to 44 psi in the tires. I would be raising 3 kinds of h--- with the tire dealer and seeking some kind of adjustment to get LT tires installed at a greatly reduced price. P tires are not good to tow anything other than a small single axle lawn mower trailer IMO.

I went in to talk with the dealership service mgr. I also wrote a politely forcefull letter for him about having to take the truck back 3 times for balance issues. And the stuff i haul and tow. He's going to replace the tires, I just have to pay the difference for the price of them. I'm happy with that. I'm sure his tire store mgr will get an earful from him. Hopefully the tires will be balanced right the first time this time.

Not only should they be "LT" tires be sure they have an "E" load rating 10 ply rated sidewall as well.

I agree with you.
When I replaced the crappy OEM Goodyear Wranglers on our 2012 Ram 1500 4X4 w/Michelan LTX AT2 tires at 10,000 miles, I assumed the tire dealer would put LT tires on. But nope, they put P series tires on and I didn't catch it until I checked the tire pressures once a month like I always do. Was I surprised and mad at myself 'cause I sure can't afford to get a new set and it wasn't the tire dealers fault at this point. I should have insisted on LT series; but they will only put what the factory put on unless requested. While our FR Surveyor 220 trailer only weighs 5000 lbs loaded the P series is not as much of an issue as with your scenario; but it just galls me that the counter help at these tire places can't just ask "whatca gonna use these tires for?" and help avoid this problem. My P series tires ride well and I am pleased with them as far as that goes but for safety and load, I really wished I had been more attentive at the tire dealer and got what I wanted!

I dealt with the tire store manager every time I've went there, and looking back I remember talking with him about using my truck to tow horses. He shoulda known better. I shoulda known better to trust the store. I didn't have a camper back then and never really thought too much about loads and tires, but have since learned a lot from all here on this website. These stories are simply amazing. I intend to use this info (minus names) in an up coming post on my blog as a warning that people need to take more responsibility for the major components they have replaced on their vehicles.

In these cases it was normal pickups that got the wrong type tire. The load capacities are wrong so there is a potential safety issue.

I am old enough to remember when you could go to an auto parts store and the guy behind the counter actually knew how an engine ran. Today we only have order takers as "salesmen" that sell tires one day and washing machines the next with absolutely no demonstrated interest in ensuring they were providing the customer what will best serve their needs.
