Primus IQ or P2 Brake Controller

Today we will be having the wiring and brake controller installed in our truck. Now trying to make the decision regarding the brake controller. Unfortunately, we don't know enough to make a decision on our own...so HELP!!

I just picked a P2 off Ebay for $48 shipping included. If I've read right the P2 is a successor to the Primus iq.

Either one is a proportional controller and should work fine.

I use the Primus, the first generation. Think of it as an upgrade because of the read out's only. They all are the same and work the exact same way . I would go for the cheapest way to go. They are all the same which means they all work on proportion. I have had mine for years and has worked on 3 different trailers no matter what the TT weight is.....

Actually, the Primus IQ is fairly new. The P2 is the original Prodigy and the P3 is the latest and greatest.

The Primus IQ uses the primary sensor technology from Prodigy P2 according to Cequent. They are both proportional and detect how hard you are braking.

I think they are both good controllers, with the Primus being marketed as "economical" and the P2 as more flexible.

The P2 can be mounted many different ways - straight up, straight down or anywhere in between. The Primus is limited to a range of 0 degrees to 70 degrees nose up.

There are differences on the display and control buttons.

The P2 uses a rotary lever on the underside for a manual over ride whereas the Primus uses the older slide design. There are some differences in the buttons. I think both of these differences are personal preferences.

The P2 can be used with electric over hydraulic trailer brake systems.

I believe that the P2 has more diagnostic abilities to help you troubleshoot problems with the brakes and brake wiring. You need to confirm that, tho.

One you didn't mention but is worth considering is the P3. Its like the P2 but costs more and has many more diagnostics (i.e., its fun to play with ).

go for the P2. love mine and it's worth the price difference.

by the way, you could easily helped yourself with the decision, by doing a search on any RV forum.
RV.net has thousands and thousands of posts about the P2. that's where i did my research when i was shopping. it's talked about nearly every single day and recommended nearly every single day.

for under $100, there's no better controller. by far, the most popular controller ins the past few years.

I upgraded to a P2 when I got my Expedition and it does the trick. There are lots of variable settings you can use depending on the situation, your rig and driving conditions. I also like that you can mount it in most any angle and it will auto-sense and work just fine.

I use a Prodigy P2, watched the video on Etrailers.com, ordered one and installed it in just a few minutes. No problems with setting it up...
