Ram Trailer Brake Controller Problem???

So I have had this little issue pop up on my 2015 2500....and i am not sure where to start. Its actually a big deal i think but wanted to see if there was any one with a similar story. This week we were on our way back home from Kansas with trailer in tow and a few minutes into our departure, the truck flashed check the trailer wiring popped up on the info center. This is not the first time, however this time unlike others it never ever stopped. It would flash check wirning, then to trailer disconnected then service trailer controller. Then it would cycle back around again. I stopped multiple times to check the connection, bend the tabs on the trailer plug, zip tied the plug to the truck all to no avail. Strange thing is that the lights on the trailer worked the entire time no matter what the message, however the brakes were lost when the truck said they were disconnected. I started to think that part of the weather was to blame as we had 40-50 mph gusts all day and the cord was without a doubt moving around. When things calmed down wind wise the messages slowed. I found it very strange. I have had the same message a few times this year, however it was due to the plug not being firmly inserted in the socket. Any help would be great.

If the lights worked the entire time, I would think that the problem is in the brake wiring and not necessarily the plug. Check the wiring on the trailer all the way back to the axles. Check for voltage while moving the cord and wiring.

We had this same issue pop up this spring with our 2014 Ram 2500. At times it will drive you crazy and this past weekend it never occurred. I talked to an RV mobile repair tech over Labor Day weekend who happened to be in the park working and he said the integrated controllers are very sensitive. He advise installing an aftermarket unit and bypassing the OEM unit. I haven't done anything about it yet. Someone else will be hauling my trailer in a couple of weeks and I am going to ask them to keep an eye on it and see if it's my truck or truly a trailer issue.

No issues on our 14 RAM with many thousands of miles towing different trailers. Only time it acted up was when I had a brake wire fail at the hub on my car hauler.

When the installer, installed my WDH they crimped one wire. It was for the brakes and I got the same message. Dont remember the color, but check your wiring on the trailer.

My 2500 ram did this as well. The dealership has an update to reprogram the brake controller. Once it was done. No more issues.

check the wiring harness that goes in the back of the 7 pin plug. mine wasn't connected properly or pushed in enough to hit the latches so i would get an error every once and a while.

ryand, snapper, not sure his symptom's are in line with the ITBM S.B. 08-82-16.The condition that this applies to is when trailer is already hook up and the truck was turn off. After the truck was turn on/started the Intergrated Trailer Brake Module would some time fail to get a return signal from all inputs from the plug.Ryand is this your condition, but either way when you have your truck brought in they are going to plug in and check for faults as well as T.S.B due on the truck. It is done right there in the service lane with you.

My 2010 Ram 2500 did the same. Dealer found bad terminal on back of 7 pin plug, same as poster #7

Check the ground return from the brakes to the frame. It's often just screwed to the frame using a ring connector and a self-tapping screw. When they get corroded, they don't conduct electricity.
