The anonymity of social media can bring out the worst in people. I guess that makes it antisocial media.

I didn't take the time to read all posts, but I am a victim of assuming the factory did their job. Had a blown bearing on a 1 year old trailer. The $400 roadside repairman pulled the opposite side to discover there was almost no grease.

Bought our new trailer and found little grease in this one too. I was smart enough to not assume this time.

I'm not so sure. I think it's probably a lot closer to this:

I use EZ lube and never have blown a seal yet. If you pump the grease gun slowly it works just fine.

Shhhh. You'll anger the thought police here. Nonconforming opinions about EZ Lube and contrary experiences are not well tolerated.

Good luck.

Is it a perfect system? No. But it obviously works for a lot of people... An AWFUL lot of people.
Right?
It has worked for me 2 out of 2 times... 2 different trailers that is, separated by 5 years

I agree with this...

I think that some types of grease are more viscous then others and have a harder time "flowing" through the bearings AND/OR the bearings are not warmed up, OR it is a cold day... ??? people that happen to pick a less viscous grease (BY CHANCE) probably have an easier time using the EZ-Lube system.

When people talk about pumping a tube of grease into a wheel bearing I have a hard time with that...

I know there are small tubes and large tubes... maybe a small tube of grease for every two wheels I could believe... but a large tube???

When some people post they found very little grease how much are they talking about? a thimble full? a cup full? how much is enough? I guess packed as full as it could be is enough...

I took off one EZ-Lube axle wheel this past weekend to see what I would find. I took pics... I had to stop after one as it started to rain AGAIN... I will post pics of EZ-Lube axle disassembly... not any different than any other axle disassembly...

As with many topics on these forums, use your best judgment and do what works for you. Hopefully, you’ll be more aware of some of the possible pitfalls or problems that can occur.

A rain delay? That’s hard to believe! At least it wasn’t snow!

Pulled my bearings after two years. Asked the service guys at the family-owned dealership if they had repackaged the bearings after receiving the trailers from the factory when we bought our trailer. They said they did it for all incoming trailers as part of the prep work. Had the bearings repacked last spring at a trailer service company. They handle the local ranch livestock trailers and come highly recommended. I asked for a report on the condition of the bearings and how much grease was actually present. The shop tech said they were in excellent condition and had been properly packed to begin with. I asked what their recommended service interval was and they said every two years unless you travel 20,000 miles or more per year in high heat conditions. I will see them next year.

Was just having a discussion about this in a Facebook blog. Several people posted that they have found the factory many times does not sufficiently pack the bearings. We were talking about the Dexter EZ axles. I would certainly air on the side of caution and repack for such a long hot trip. IMHO

X2..........and my advice is to NEVER use the zerk fittings on the axle to pump more grease into the hub.

Do it by hand and you will KNOW it is done right and not overfilled, which can and will destroy your brakes.

Every year is not really necessary. I do mine every 3 years and it is fine. Grease is not consumed in use, so pumping in a few squirts using the zerk fitting can lead to over filling the hub.

When I was younger the front wheel bearings on all cars needed to be packed by hand. We did them every 50,000 miles and it was fine. I don't think you pull your camper more than that in 3 years, do you?

We've done 3000 miles so far this year alone and have only taken 1 trip.

Maybe RV trailers should be like my boat trailer and have oil bath hubs. No grease, just heavy oil, and clear hubs so you can visually check the gear oil level.

Well, unless you average more than 13,000 a year, then 3 years should be sufficient. If you do, then you can go to a 2 year schedule. Or, out an abundance of caution you can do it every year. NO harm in doing it too often, is there?

The newest ones have sealed bearings, just like most new cars/trucks.

Hey! That ought to clean up real nice after a little soap & hot water with some brake cleaner.

Good reason to let the pros handle the job.

If you have an extended warranty...make sure to read ALL OF THE FINE PRINT!

Many of the warranties REQUIRE a once per year wheel bearing repack whether it needs it or not!

And you need to carry this proof with you on the road in case you need to make a claim (been there, lived it).

And an EZ-Lube squeeze-in doesn't count...
