Real tire bomb

I was at the Flying J truck stop South of Wilsonville, Oregon this afternoon gassing up for a trip South. There was a fellow at the adjacent island airing the tires on his Arctic Fox 5er. I turned back to my pump and then heard a loud explosion. I turned and saw a large cloud and the deflated tire. The man looked disoriented and apparently could not hear bystanders speaking to him. I was about 20 feet away and my ears were ringing an hour afterwards.

I would be very surprised if he did not suffer injury to his hearing. He was lucky that the rupture was on the inside of the tire or he may have been injured more severely.

Not at all surprised. When high pressure tires go they go off with a blast....... I remember a few years back teenagers were cutting tires in the neighborhood. There just happened to be a truck tractor parked on the street. When the teenager punctured the truck tire hee was killed instantly.......

An empty log truck was in from of me on a 4 lane road when one of the tires "went off" the gator went higher than the standards (approx. 14 feet into the air the truck was traveling at least 55mph..........

I've heard it 3 times over the road noise. Unmistakable.

Used to work in the tire industry and most of the blown tires I have seen are due to heat The first rule is to check any tire for heat, If it's hot, get away from it. Second is big gigs do not routinely check air pressures and they heat up and can go boom even after they are stopped or been sitting a bit. When you overheat a tire it's like your overinflating it to it's structural failure point, and thats when things get noisy.

The spare tire on my boat trailer exploded in my driveway last summer. Goodyear Marathon.

I bought a better quality temp gun, Dewalt, for $65.00 CDN. Worth the extra money for accuracy.

I use one when I travel with my fiver. I check the tires as well as wheel hubs for over heating or drastic temperature differential
