Spring Time, Brakes & Bearings
Had some time to do my annual breaks and bearing check.
I also took the tires in to have heaver valve stems installed for the new TPMS unit I got for Christmas(yep I lag).
All bearings and races looked great so that was easy.
I found one broken wire right at the break magnet. I might try soldering it and saving as a spare, Ill clean it up and see.( the brake was not working at all for who knows how long in the last year)
One break shoe warn more than others, replace.(with full assembly; look below for info)
One grease seal blown and one that had miner issue. I don’t know if synthetic grease is tougher or if break cleaner is getting weaker but it was hard to clean up the mess.
Two of my brake drums have decent grooves from their magnets and the same magnets are looking worn. I don’t have a lot of experience with these electric brakes. Do I have the drum surface milled down? Do I just replace the magnets?(the brake shoe surface of the drum looks great) Well I figure I’ll deal with them next year.
An interesting price note: break shoes $27, break magnet $30; a full Dexter backing plate assembly $50. A big thanks to the parts-counter-guy for informing me, even made the job quicker.
I greased all the shackles in the suspension and took some time to look for any other problems like broken welds or loose brackets.
I sure like getting under my camper to know what’s going on. I think about how long I’ll want to do this myself, but I still have a few more years in me.
A Yearly Check Is Good
