Tandum axle Double Eye Leaf Springs question
We bought a 24' Cargo Mate (a subsidiary of Forest River) toy hauler. We spent months on a detailed CAD drawing of what we wanted. We are preparing for our first trip and while crawling under the trailer, my husband noticed that the spare tire compartment, which was to be built behind the rear axle, is actually built over the rear axle and rests on it. We chose a toy hauler because we plan to do some remote camping and the terrain may be rugged. I am concerned that this is going to be a huge problem.
We called the dealer to advise and he said that this is normal. He said that torsion axles don't move up and down, but pivot. We have tandem axles. We called the manufacturer of the axle, Dexter Axle, and spoke with an engineer. He said that the axle is tandem and will move up and down and needs a minimum of 1.5 inches clearance. He said that the factory and sales rep are wrong if they think that the box should rest on the axle. We called the sales rep back to advise and also provide him with the engineer's name and number. As usual, they will get back to us. We are leaving in a few days for our first trip. Should we go? Am I concerned over nothing?
