Tire advice, please

I'm new to this forum and wish I would have joined a year ago after I bought my 5th wheel. But I didn't. I'm here now though.

Running Castlerock, the E rated versions that came with the Flagstaff 8529IKBS. Two have blown out and both did body damage. I have a large trip planned in a month and the latest blow-out puts my plans in jeopardy.

Is my impression of these tires (which is really-really bad) correct? If so, I don't want to have this an issue again due to the body damage and dangers for both me, my wife and the AAA guy hanging out along side the road getting a spare put on. Both have blown on an interstate.

I want to ask what would be a tire I won't have to worry about? These CastleRocks have max load of 2840 each, do I go with better E rated tires or is there an F rating? One other thing, where does one get a replacement fender? icondirect doesn't have one my size. Is there an OEM part place for Flagstaff parts or something?

The GVWR is 11,581 lbs according to the sticker. Dual Axles. Front and rear load is 5,000 lbs on sticker. Sticker says cargo can be 2089 lbs. My math (assuming full cargo) is 11,581 + 2,089 = 13,679 divided by 4 tires means I need 4 @ ~3,400 lbs each. This just doesn't add up to me. Why put 2,800 lb tire on this thing in the first place.

Many thanks,
Jeff

You should post this as a new thread. You are doing what is called "hijacking" this thread started by another poster.

We can provide much more accurate information for you if you will post the year, make and model of your trailer. That will allow us to find the specifications as shipped and make recommendations from there.

Welcome Aboard.

Note; the reason for year model is there have been dramatic changes in OEM tire load capacities in the past two years and the date the vehicle hit the assembly line plays a big part in tire/wheel fitments.

The GVWR includes the cargo. Dry weight + cargo = GVWR (max). 11,581/4 = 2,895 lbs each. Some of the GVWR is going to the tongue, so your actual weight per tire is less. However, if I am reading your info correctly your axles are only rated for 5K each - and are therefore the limiting factor. Your tires have an 11% cushion over the axles. To reach your full GVWR and keep the axles within limits, you need 1,581lbs on the tongue (I bet you don't have).

Personally, I think your axles are undersized - and should be your first point of upgrade - if you are going to run full GVWR on your TT.

Others can point out where I'm wrong - if I am.

The site team moved these posts to their own thread, to get better answers..and not be confusing to other topics.

I believe that the OP has 5th wheel
If that is the case, the pin weight will be closer to 2000 lbs. plus. If that is the case his axles should be fine
Not great but adequate. I will apologize now if I am not reading this correctly.

Get rid of the Castle Rocks, buy same size and load range E Maxxis M8008 or Goodyear Endurance. You'll be fine, especially at that GVWR.
For replacement parts, if you can't find it with an internet search, find a good RV parts Dept at a dealer and they can order it for you.

X2.

There are MANY threads here about Castle Rocks and thousands of posts.

The three most recommended tires are (in no particular order) Goodyear Endurance, Maxxis M8008 and Carlisle HD.

Also the GVWR is the TOTAL loaded amount the RV can handle.
You do not add the cargo weight to the GVWR.

You need to know what your rig weighs (loaded) and that can not exceed 11,581.

I just replaced my castle pops with goodyear endurance. By going up in load range I have more than 1k lbs more margin. I will be towing approx 2k miles this summer and felt like I was already lucky that we had not blown one of those china bombs as of yet.

Jeff what size rims are on your 5er??? 15" or 16" it makes a big difference on what load range tire you can buy. If they are 16" you should be able to upgrade to load range G tires.

Hope this helps Tim

I just took delivery of my early-2019 Rockwood 8290BS which is very similar in size and weight to the Flagstaff 8529IKBS. It was manufactured 04/04/2018 and has Castle Rock LR E 225/75R15 tires manufactured in the 48th and 49th week of 2017 (late-November or early-December of 2017). I took the rig across the highway scales on the way home from the dealer last weekend and they are well under the load rating although I still haven't loaded the trailer will all our stuff - maybe about 1/3 though.

So they are not going to be overweight and I'll keep them at 80 psi. My only concern is about the age and the fact that they've never been covered sitting on the dealer's lot. It's not Florida sun, but still. They may or may not be a China Bomb, but they are very likely poorer quality than the Maxxis M8008s and the Goodyear Endurance tires. I'll probably replace them later this year with one of those 2 brands but still in a LR E.

The GVWR - 11581# includes the cargo. To do the math for the axles we must assume the vehicle manufacturer used a minimum tongue/hitch weight of 1581# to get to the 5000# GAWR axles. The GAWRs are the driving factor for tire selection. Therefore, tires having a maximum load capacity of 2750# would meet the RIVA 110% recommendation for all trailers 2017 or later models.

IMO you really need to solve the issue of early tire failures before getting new tires on the rig.
